Things have balanced out in the 4A Great Basin West Conference over the past few years, with 2016 looking like a three-headed battle for the top between Twin Falls, Wood River and 21st year Head Coach Tim Perrigot and his Minico Spartans.

In a conference where most of the teams focus their offense heavily on running the football, the Spartans are one of the best on a yearly basis.

Once again the offensive unit will run out of the multiple Wing T set. Last season Minico ran over, around and through the opposition for 2,684 yards, while putting up over 36 points per contest.

Chase Chandler will handle the quarterback duties. Perrigot is excited about what the single-caller will bring to the field.

"Chandler is a more mobile threat and is throwing the ball well."

A trio of backs will supplement Chandler in the backfield, highlighted by big-bruising running back Tim Miller, a 225-pound junior bowling ball. Chase Bingham and Larry Vega round out the group.

The success of Minico is based off of how successfully the team runs the ball, and also how well they slow down the threat on the other end.

For those familiar with Magic Valley football, they know Boe Boston is the anchor of those defensive efforts.

A senior middle linebacker, Boston rallied up 80 tackles, 16 assists and 2 sacks in 2015. Perrigot had high praise for his leader.

"Boe Boston will be one of the best players in the Great Basin West Conference and Idaho."

Senior defensive end Chancy Bott and quarterback Chandler, who also mans the defensive backfield, were listed as other key returners for the Minico defense.

Plenty of tradition has been built up around the program, and this edition of the team will be tested right out of the gate.

"We will be traveling to Pocatello to play in the Rocky Mountain Rumble versus Stansbury, Utah week one. The following week we return to Holt Arena to play Century. Two very difficult games to start the season," said Perrigot. "Our third game is our fierce rivalry game with Burley. We hope to represent our school, our community and Idaho in these games."

Minico has won eight of the last 11 Great Basin West Conference titles, only missing the playoffs once since 2004.

"Our community has rallied around our football team. Friday nights have a college like game atmosphere [including] tailgating, exciting pregame events and fun halftime shows. It’s a tough atmosphere for opponents. We have only lost nine regular season home games since 2005," said Perrigot.

One thing is for certain though, the teams the Spartans have to go up against on a weekly basis in conference play have continued to get better, something that will make 2016 one of the biggest challenges yet.

"Conference is getting tougher every year," said Perrigot. "Wood River is the team to beat, as most of their starters return. If we stay healthy, it will be a great year for the Spartans."

Expect Minico to once again be in the mix.

"If we stay healthy, we could make a run. Many experienced JV players return from our 2015 team and we have a small, yet talented, senior class."
