Each season since coming to the 2A ranks has been a gauntlet of a schedule for the Bear Lake Bears, however after taking some bumps in the road with a young group last year the new campaign looks to have some more promise in Montpelier.

Multiple starters are back including two-year point guard Avery Carlsen and one-year starters Matthew Humpherys and Hayden Peterson.

With everything that comes back the Bears are going to go by the "strength in numbers" approach, providing multiple options at any time on the floor for eighth year Head Coach Brandon Carlsen.

Residing in the same conference as perennial powers West Side and Soda Springs creates a major challenge in regards to getting to the upper echelon.

"Our district is one of the toughest in the state, as Soda and West Side have played for the state title the last two years, so come district tournament time it's gonna be a fun battle," said Carlsen.

For Carlsen, it's pretty simple what he is most excited for with the current group on the hardwood this winter.

"Just returning so many [players]. We were really young last year with only one senior, so we have guys that have been here before."

Last year should be a good indication that on any given day the Bears can battle with the best of teams in and out of conference. This time around the challenge will be to do it on a nightly basis.

The schedule for the upcoming season is one that should test the group early and often, which will help once Bear Lake gets into the heart of conference action.

The Bears hit the floor for the first time on December 3 hosting the always-tough Shelley Russets.
