Entering her fifth season at the helm to the Highland Huskies boys basketball team, Coach Patty Weeks has done a tremendous job. She took the position with no previous coaching experience when one of her sons was playing. That one has graduated, but now she is on to coaching another.

Last season, Coach Weeks had two 6’4” twin towers of posts who had strong inside games in Tanner Dempsey and Hunter Droegmiller. Unfortunately, their eligibility ran out with something called graduation. Coach Weeks will be turning to junior Morgan Weeks (Whitepine Honorable Mention) will be called upon by his coach/mother to be the playmaker to get the team in sink and moving in the correct direction. Weeks is not the only player on this Husky squad. They return four other players and welcome in a transfer from Summit Academy in junior Justin Wassmuth.

Winning one game at a time and not looking forward to an opponent or post season is the way these Huskies will be focused this season. With Weeks and senior trace Brammer leading the charge, Coach Weeks is confident this team will be right there. She expects both Weeks and Brammer to continue to lead the team in steals, which will allow them to push the ball up floor and create as many easy scoring opportunities as possible. Coach Weeks is starting with the defensive side of the ball and wants even more pressure than before. Reffering to Brammer as having sticky fingers when it comes to rebounding and getting steals, he doesn’t lose many.

Looking for one win at a time, the Huskies must get prepared in season and be focused with what Coach Weeks referred to as “not settling with just being at the District tournament” this year. She believes this team can battle for the top spot in the Whitepine 1A D2 league. Coach Weeks is looking forward to the magic this team has in store. The players have been working extra hard in the offseason. Several even joined the cross-country team to go the extra mile.

Look for the Huskies to be howling and pulling Coach Weeks towards making a run at State.
