Raft River had a strong season last year, going 17-7 and advancing to the 1AD1 state tournament.

The new campaign will feature plenty of change, namely on the sidelines, as Cody Powers takes over as the new head coach.

Powers, formerly an assistant at Burley, inherits a team that lost a trio of outstanding seniors from last season including primary scorer Marka Baker and point guard Lauren Schumann.

The group that is in place however looks to repeat some of the same success even with the losses.

“We’ve got a great group of girls who want to work hard at getting better every day,” said Powers. “It’s exciting when girls are excited themselves to be here.”

Fortunately for the Trojans, size on the interior should not be much of a problem, with Marcie Williams and Mandi Carpenter expected to get plenty of looks on the inside.

“Low-post scoring with Carpenter and Williams will be a big focus,” said Powers.

With the coaching philosophy in place, they should get countless opportunities.

“Offensively, we will be looking to get a lot of looks close to the basket, and hopefully our ability to score down low will open up shots outside,” said Powers. “Fans should be excited about the group of girls we have this season.”

The challenge of replacing so much scoring punch is obvious, although Raft River appears ready to take on the challenge.

“We lost a big chunk of our scoring from last season and we need new girls to step up into that role,” said Powers.

In a tough conference highlighted by Oakley and Valley, the Trojans will need the youth to step up in the early going and mature quickly.
