Team Preview:

Written by: David Bashore

The last few years, Gooding has been in the position of being a pretty good basketball team in a loaded SCIC. That’s led to records that belie the Senators’ talent and ability. Under the new leadership of first-year coach Kenley Nebeker in 2015-16, they hope to put everything together and finally crack the upper echelon of the conference.

The Senators have seven returning players, including all-conference honorees Tyler Visser and Bryson Comstock, to go with talented Clancy Cockerham, who missed much of last season but has starred at Gooding since his freshman year.

Balance will be one of Gooding’s strengths, but it will still need multiple players firing on a given night to be successful long-term. Gooding has good shooters and athletic players across the board, and the Senators will look to take advantage of any mismatches they can generate in their offense. Past issues like handling pressure defense, and thus limiting turnovers, will have to be addressed, particularly as conference play approaches.

Defensively Gooding has the athletes to play man-to-man defense, and again, maximizing matchups will be key for the Senators to keep pace. The SCIC will be a war between all four conference foes when league play begins. All of those games will be must-watch, but Gooding will hope it can remain in the conversation until the very end.

Solid defense and good shooting will be the difference for whichever teams are able to survive one of the most competitive conferences in the state. The Senators hope that, for the first time in a while, they’re one of them.
