Lapwai’s record trail of destruction at the 1A-I state girlsbasketball tournament swept up reigning champions Prairie as well.
The Wildcats won their seventh state title in programhistory, brushing aside their conference rival Pirates 65-43 on Saturday to winthe 1A-I Girls Real Dairy Shootout.
Iris Domebo scored 16 points and had nine rebounds to pace abalanced but lethal Wildcat offense. They set an all-division record with 100points in Thursday’s game against Idaho City and their three-day total of 229also is a new all-division record.
Lapwai was making its third straight state title gameappearance, having lost to Kamiah in 2013 and Prairie last year.
“We just reallywanted it this year,” said Lapwai senior Erin Ramsey. “We had been here before,we knew what it was like to come up short and we really just wanted to make ourcommunity happy. They had their hearts set on this for three years.”
The Wildcats’ defense was equally relentless. Lapwai gave upjust 97 points in the tournament and forced 121 turnovers in three games.
Their full-court press hassled and harried Prairie into 26turnovers on Saturday.
“We’re family. We play hard and we play together,” Domebosaid.
Lapwai threatened to break away in the first half,stretching its lead to eight in the second quarter before Prairie reeled theWildcats back to within two.
The line finally broke for the Pirates in the third quarter,though, as Lapwai outscored them 21-7 to put the game away.
Erin Ramsey had 14 points, Marquel Shawl added 11 and ShiniahHolt added 10 for the Wildcats.
In the loss, Prairie’s Kayla Schumacher had a game-high 20points and 12 rebounds.
