It’s really cool how a sport can brings us together. Take the championship my New Plymouth team won in baseball in 1994. Not only were we state champs, but so were the students, the faculty, the alumni, the town and the people. We all won. I truly believe that. A single championship ties us with an invisible cord that bonds us together forever.
I felt that way when I was watching the Super Bowl this year. The best town I have ever lived in, bar none, would be Chico, California. In fact, the day I left Chico and moved to Idaho,I am not too ashamed to admit that I cried. Like a little baby. Part of me wishes I had stayed there forever. As a die-hard Rams fan, I do not normally root for the Packers. Unless,of course, they are out of it, and a native son from Chico is in it! My attire for the game reflected my feelings: green shirt with a Rams hat!
Yes, Aaron Rogers is from Chico. He went to Pleasant Valley High, where I subbed for a year after getting my teaching credential. He also went to nearby Butte College, which is where I got my first paid teaching job. I taught 2 night classes in Astronomy in 1980 for the Roadrunners.
Well, I wasn’t crying yesterday when the Packers won the Super Bowl because now Chico can lay a claim to being a large part of the victory. Aaron Rodgers won the MVP award and I am sure that Chico went absolutely nuts. I wish I could have been there.
Some are saying that Rodgers’ performance will go down as one of the greatest ever for a QB in the big game. That just makes the icing on the cake that much sweeter. So party down, Chico, you made it to the top… where you belong! It just begs for one more question: Brett who?
