In a Thursday press release, Gov. Brad Little announced Local Education Agencies may allow up to 40% capacity for spectators attending high school and middle school athletic events in Idaho.

The new guidelines fall under Stage 2 of Idaho reopening strategy. According to the press release, local gyms may fill up to 40% or allow "four spectators per student participant, whichever is larger." The limitation only applies if spectators can either physically distance or wear masks.

Local Education Agencies may introduce stricter guidelines should they so choose, but athletic personnel, including coaches and students not currently participating must wear masks. According to Michael Lycklama of the Idaho Statesman, the 4A and 5A Southern Idaho Conference will take a more cautionary approach and not fill their gyms to 40%, instead allowing four attendees per athlete of the home team.

According to the press release, attendees who will not count against the 40% mark include participating athletes, cheerleaders, dance teams and band members. Student spectators may only attend home games, and will count against the school's 40% capacity.
