When it came time to prepare for Hailey Stewart’s first-ever day of school, her mother had a specific task.
“I had to get her a backpack that was big enough to fit her basketball,” Jennifer Stewart said with a laugh. “Because she had to take her basketball to school.”
Stewart completed her final season at Middleton High School, as the Vikings came just short of a 4A state championship appearance. But for Stewart, who earned first-team All-State honors as a junior, it’s a story that started early and usually included a basketball.
“Basketball has been my favorite sport forever,” Stewart said. “I used to go to my dad’s open gym and watch him play.”
Even before those early dribbling days, she received a basketball hoop for her first birthday. The ball sat on her bed with her at night while she slept. e watched and he played. And played. And played.
