How did you first get interested in softball?
I’ve been playing softball since I was four, mainly because my dad has always been my coach. He’s been my main driving force for playing for as long as I can remember.
What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned from high school sports?
The most valuable lesson I’ve learned from high school sports is to play your hardest every game because it can end before you realize it. I’ve had friends whose careers were cut too short and it’s truly heartbreaking. But my high school softball family is one of the strongest families I have, so I cherish every game I have the privilege of playing with them.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
I don’t know if I have a single standout, “best advice,” because honestly, I get a lot of good advice every day from my dad. He’s been my biggest life coach since I was little, and if you know him personally, anyone would vouch for his “fishing-themed life advice”.
What has been your favorite high school memory so far?
My favorite high school memory was winning state last year. My team and I worked our butts off to even be at state and proved to a lot of people what we were capable of. I will never forget the moment our pitcher threw that final strike to end the game and us exploding and crying and hugging each other. It was truly the moment of a lifetime.
What coaches or teachers have made the biggest impact on your athletic career?
Obviously my dad has been one of the biggest influences of my career, but I also would like to give a shout out to my high school coach Missy Nichols and my club coach Nate Shimatsu. Both of these people have shaped me as a player in so many ways. But both of them taught me that it’s not about winning or losing, it’s about improving. They also taught me how important it is to be selfless on a team.
Which teammates have you really connected with during high school?
I’ve really connected with all the girls I’ve played with the past few years because team chemistry is the most important thing about our team. It is, I believe, one of the main reasons we were able to win the championship last year. Your team is as strong as your weakest link and since we were all so emotionally connected, we really treated each other as family. It’s also important because those relationships carry over into the next year so it becomes even more tight-knit.
What’s something most people don’t know about you?
I am an artist! I love to draw, paint and take photos. When I’m not on the field or doing homework, you could usually catch me doing those things.
What about this season are you looking forward to the most?
Honestly, with this whole virus crisis, I’m just grateful for every second I get to spend with my team. I’m still praying for a two-timer, but in the meantime, I’m going to play my hardest and be thankful for every moment I have left of being a BK Knight.
