Albertsons Big Deal of the Week: Bailey Vanderwall (Grangeville)
Up in Grangeville, the Bulldogs have an ace point guard in this week's Big Deal of the Week

Name: Bailey Vanderwall
School: Grangeville High School
Grade: Sophomore
Sport: Basketball
Position: Guard/Forward

How did you first get interested in your sport?
My mom and my current coach started getting a few of my friends and me to play AAU in the second grade. I loved the sport and just kept it up.

If you play other sports, which is your favorite and why?
Volleyball. It’s is a fun, team sport to play. I especially enjoy beach volleyball and fun pick-up games.

What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned from high school sports?
It’s not just my game that will produce a win. There will never be a win without the efforts of the whole team. You have to learn to trust and rely on your teammates, and in turn they will do the same to you. That is the only way to ensure success.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
My mom once told me, “Play the game because YOU love it, not because you are trying to fill the stat sheet. Hard work off the court will show itself on the court. Always give credit where credit is deserved, recognizing the efforts of the whole team.”

What has been your favorite high school memory so far?
One of my best experiences of high school was making it to state as a freshman last year. It was an outstanding experience. The basketball games were competitive, but the team bonding was a memory I will never forget.

What coaches or teachers have made the biggest impact on your athletic career?
Michelle Barger, my current high school coach and AAU coach, has been mentoring me for eight years. She instilled in me many of the fundamental skills I rely on when I’m competing on the court.

Which teammates have you really connected with during high school?
My whole current team has a great bond and atmosphere. There are three other sophomore girls on the team with me, and they are some of my closest friends. Camden Barger and I have played hundreds of games together over the last eight years, forming a very strong bond on and off the court. I enjoy competing with all of these girls because they push me to be better.

Is there anyone in your family who have helped you get to where you are today?
My parents have always supported my basketball career, and they continually push me to be better. My siblings both also play basketball and we all try to push each other to improve.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?
I like dancing with my teammates during practice and in the locker rooms before games and enjoy making them laugh with my questionable cartwheels.

What about this season are you looking forward to the most?
I am hoping that my team can make it to state and do well there. We are a very close, strong team and I cannot wait to see where our potential takes us.
