Offensive strengths/areas for improvement: We have 3 of 5 returning offensive linemen. Our QB is returning with a good deal of playing varsity as a sophomore last season. We have one returning WR with good speed and hands. We need to improve our passing game and our ability to score inside the "red Zone". We also need to work on sustaining long drives and keeping our defense off the field.
Defensive strengths/areas for improvement: Our defensive strength will be in our linebackers. We need to get better at stopping the run and creating turnovers.
Special team Strengths: We will need to find a kicker and a punter for this season. We have been very consistent setting up good starting field position after we return a kickoff.
Offensive Outlook: It will all depend on what we can do up front, as is always the case. We have an extremely intelligent QB in TJ Ellis and he will have some key weapons to go to in Jon Pulsifer and Ricky Ackridge. Jayson Welker with add a great deal of speed and good running ability once he gets out in space. We are looking for a feature back going into the season, as we lost our running backs last season due to graduation. We are wanting to open up the formations and get the ball out in space to different personnel and take advantage of some speed we feel we have on the edge.
Defensive Outlook: We will foccus on stopping the run this year with some 7- and 8-man fronts. We feel we will have good team speed on the defensive side of the ball. It is our intention to get as many defenders to the ball carrier on every play as possible. We have been experimenting with some different looks defensively during our spring camp. We bring a tougher mentality to the defensive side of the football this year.
Conference Outlook: Jerome and Minico are going to be solid. Both programs have been good for the last two years. Minico did lose some key players over the last two seasons that will leave some holes that need to be replaced. Jerome will have a better handle on an offense that was implemented three years ago. They played for the state 4A championship last year, therefore we need to set our sites on the Tigers of Jerome. Wood River has a new coach this year and will be adjusting to a new system. Burley has some stability in a head coach returning for the third year in a row. Canyon Ridge of Twin Falls is starting out new this year and will come into the mix with a "chip on their shoulder" wanting to show that they can compete even though it is their first year. I believe we will be very competitive as long as we can stay injury free. We don't have the depth in numbers that we have had in the past with the split of last year's team with some going to CRHS. We are excited to get into a conference that is local and common to who we play in our middle school programs.
Coach's Team Summary: We drop down t the 4A classification after being in the 5A classification for most of the school's history. We lost some players to graduation and with our school splitting to a new high school (Canyon Ridge) we lost some players in the split. We have played Jerome and Minico consistently throughout the years, but we pick up Wood River and Burley as league games this year. We believe we will be very competetive in our new league and classification.
