A Growing Confidence Shelley's Adams hopes to help Russets keep pace
SHELLEY -- If you doubt Aaron Adams, he doesn't mind. If you doubt his
school, the Shelley Russets, he doesn't mind that either. It just gives him a
new challenge - one he can't wait to meet with gusto. After being a regular contender for the state 3A title year
in and year out, Shelley finds itself not only in a higher classification at 4A
this season, but also in arguably the state's most brutal conference in 2010 -
the High Country Conference. And Shelley's 5-11, 205-pound senior running back hopes to
help his team keep pace despite the ample number of naysayers. "Everyone doubts us quite a bit, but it's exciting to prove
everyone wrong," Adams said. "I would like to give people a reason to not doubt us any more. I've heard people in the Shelley
community and in newspapers and on the Internet, and they don't think we're
going to step up for another couple of years. We're out to prove them wrong." If Shelley is going to make believers out of a legion of
doubting Thomases, Adams can be the chief evangelist by converting people with
his play on the field. In Shelley's season opener, Adams rushed for 123 yards and a
touchdown in a 40-7 victory over Bonneville. But even Adams is anxious to prove
the Russets' mettle against more challenging opponents. "We know that the competition is going to get tougher each
week, so we have to stay on top of our game," Adams said. "I think we have to
have momentum each week and keep building on that. We have all the pieces
there, but we have to play together and as a team." Adams came of age midway through last season, exploding onto
the scene after adjusting to his new position. "Last year, Aaron started to understand the offense a little
bit better as the season went along," Shelley coach Dave Hadley said. "In our
wing-T offense, there are a lot of odd-man and even-man fronts. Once he began
understanding second-level blocking downfield and where it was going to take
place, he came into his own." After a 218-yard rushing performance against Salmon, Adams
had officially caught on. "Once I knew what I was doing, I got a better grasp of
everything," Adams said. "It slowed down and it got easier to do everything." Adams' gritty running style makes him tough to defend,
according to Hadley. "His biggest strength is he's not going to go down on an
initial hit," Hadley said. "One of the things that continues to impress me about
him is that he seems to get two more yards after contact. He's not afraid of
that contact. He's willing to lower his shoulder. At the same time, he's a
smart kid who knows when he needs to bounce a run outside or go inside." Adams' steady demeanor is also another asset that helps him
as a leader on the field and in the huddle. "You never know whether he is happy or mad or anything else,"
Hadley said. "He plays with a poker face, and it plays to his advantage. Other
teams can't get into his head as easily." With Adams running the football like he did last season, he
might be the one getting into opponents' heads this year. |

Games of the Week
Last Week: The Prep
Informer's Game of Week 1 was a defensive battle as Madison edged D6 rival
Rigby, 6-0. We also touted Emmett vs. Weiser as a matchup of note, and the
Emmett Huskies broke through to end their 17-game winless streak, 30-27. In Thursday night action, Borah responded to its winless season last year by opening 2010 with a 34-0 trouncing of Boise behind quarterback Braden Corpus' 179 yards passing. Defending 5A champ Eagle cruised past Centennial, 42-24, on Thursday night.
Game of the Week
Meridian (5A) at Rocky Mountain (5A): The
buzz couldn't be any bigger for both teams since just two years have passed
Rocky Mountain was formed with many players who previously attended Meridian.
The Rocky Mountain program is trending upward with 13 starters returning from
last year's playoff team for the Grizzlies. The Warriors have been down since
winning the state title in 2007 and losing talent to Rocky Mountain beginning
in 2008. Runner-Up Genesee (1A/D1) at Prairie (1A/D1): Genesee opened with an impressive White Pine win
over Lapwai, 52-8, in Week 1, but the task gets much tougher for the Bulldogs
this week. Prairie opens play as the No. 2-ranked 1A Division 1 team in the
state. Honorable Mention
Tri-Valley (1A/D2) at Horseshoe Bend (1A/D1): Both Division I schools posted wins Week 1 as
Horseshoe Bend topped Meadows Valley, 42-36, and Tri-Valley topped rival
Council, 44-24. The winner this week will continue to climb its respective
division.
Emmett (4A) at Fruitland (3A): Emmett may have ended its 17-game skid with the win over Weiser in
Week 1, but powerhouse Fruitland waits this week. The Grizzlies are a near
unanimous No.1 in the state Media Poll among 3A schools and return 10 starters
on offense, 9 on defense, as they shoot for a fifth straight appearance in the
Milk Bowl.
Shelley (4A) at Madison (4A): The Russets answered any doubters about the move up to 4A with a 40-7
thrashing of conference foe Bonneville in Week 1. The winner takes the early
lead in the High Country Conference standings at 2-0.
Horseshoe Bend over Meadows Valley, 42-36
Lake City (5A) at Mountain View (5A): Cross-state matchup is an early barometer of the
relative strengths of the northern and southwestern regions. Lake City looked
strong in cruising past Lakeland, 41-7, in Week 1. Mountain View opens with
questions at quarterback and along both the offensive and defensive lines.
Bear Lake (3A) at Soda Springs (2A): The Bears and Cardinals haven't been division rivals
since Soda Springs dropped down to 2A several years ago, but bragging rights in
the southeastern corner of Idaho still exist.
Bishop Kelly (4A) at Minico (4A): The No.1-ranked Knights open the season on the road but with a talented
group of returning players, especially on defense where all-state linebacker
Cody McCarthy patrols. Minico is unranked, but the Spartans opened with an impressive 34-7 win over Century. |
