A Place of Escape Declo's Mark Knobbe finding peace on the football field
By: Jason Chatraw, jason@idahosports.com
DECLO - When Mark Knobbe carries the football, he's toting
more than just a pound of pigskin. The Declo senior running back is also carrying the weight of
his entire community, his family, and the memory of his sister Nicole, who
passed away just before the start of the season from injuries sustained in a
car wreck. "Everyone expects me to perform because they know I
can perform," Knobbe said. "But when I make mistakes, I take it really hard. "Mondays are my worst days. That's the day we look at film
and I see what I've done wrong. I might do 50 things right, but I only see the
two or three things that I did wrong. And that ruins my day." Knobbe's mistakes are few and far between. With over 1,000
yards rushing in just four games, Knobbe has run over opponents to the tune of
more than 18 yards per carry. But don't expect Knobbe to get too excited about his
performance, even after he has waited his whole career for the opportunity to
start at running back for Declo, which has gone from pre-season No. 1 to a 1-3
record. "I've never liked people who admired their stats above the
team," Knobbe said. "I never envisioned how well I would do, I always imagined
how well I could help the team. I'm still happy I'm doing well because I've put
a lot of time into improving myself. But I would be happier if our team was
playing better." Knobbe's high level of performance this season certainly has
surprised Declo head coach Kelly Kidd. "I thought Mark was going to excel more on the defensive side
of the ball at linebacker," Kidd said. "I thought that's where he would get
most of his attention. But it's been on the offensive side. That just goes to
show how much all that hard work has paid off." Even before Knobbe stepped on the field for fall practice,
Kidd knew he had a talented leader as one of only two returning starters on
either side of the ball alongside Jared Patterson. "To talk about what Mark brings to the field, you have to go
back to what he does before he gets on the field," Kidd said. "He brings hours
and hours of preparation, and our people respect and understand what he has
done to get where he is. I find that to be the most impressive." Football has become Knobbe's place of escape-and a way to
honor the memory of Nicole, who was an enthusiastic fan of football. "She always came to my games with my whole family," Knobbe
said. "She was one of my biggest fans." Nicole was also a big fan of the Dallas Cowboys and gave
Knobbe a hard time about his team, the Chicago Bears. "Since I was 12 years old, I don't remember a time when the
Cowboys and Bears played each other and we weren't at each other's throats
about which team was better," Knobbe said fondly. "But this year, I didn't even
watch the game because it was just too hard." Each day is a challenge for Knobbe when reflecting on the
pain of losing his sister, but he's finding solace on the field. "Football is next to his family as the most important thing
to Mark," Kidd said. "He utilizes his team to give him strength. He's just a
rock." |
Week 6: Games of the Week
By: Chris Wood, chris@idahosports.com
Last Week:
Capital's staunch defense stole the luster from our Game of the Week
pick as the Eagles dominated the Eagle Mustangs, 33-7. Centennial also made a
statement with its 41-14 victory over Highland. Pocatello stayed undefeated in
the 4A ranks by handing Twin Falls its first loss, 22-21. Several other games
we highlighted also went to the wire. Gooding's first win of the season was a
26-21 thriller over Glenns Ferry, and Kamiah knocked off previously undefeated
Grangeville, 21-14. Shoshone moved into the state's top five in 1A Division 1
with an 18-14 victory over previous No. 1 Oakley.
Game of the Week Rocky Mountain at Coeur d'Alene: Rocky Mountain's ascent to the top of the state's
5A rankings has been swift, but the Grizzlies face perhaps their stiffest test
of the season to date with a trip north to face the Vikings, who blasted
Sandpoint 55-7 last week to move into the 5A rankings at No. 5. Rocky Mountain
relies on running back Jordan Deck to lead its potent offense that averages
45.5 points per game. Coeur d'Alene's strength has been a defense that gives up
15.5 points per game. This could be a 5A state playoff preview and will be a
good barometer of the relative strengths of all teams from the northern and
southwestern areas.Honorable MentionsHomedale at Weiser:
After opening 0-2, the Weiser Wolverines jumped back into the 3A Snake River
Valley Conference race by hammering Parma 56-26 last week. The Homedale Trojans
have been rolling all season at 5-0. The winner gets to battle Fruitland for
the conference's top spot. Skyview at Bishop Kelly: The Knights have been sitting atop the 4A rankings all season, but
they haven't been challenged since beating Minico 13-6 to open the season.
Skyview may be the team to put Bishop Kelly to the test. The Hawks edged rival
Nampa 29-28 last week for their third straight victory. Parma at Fruitland:
Parma got a rude welcome to the Snake River Valley Conference last week, and
now the Panthers must face unbeaten Fruitland, the state's top-ranked 3A team.
The Grizzlies are coming off a 76-16 thrashing of Lake City and look as strong
as ever. Sugar-Salem at Kimberly: The Kimblery Bulldogs knocked off 4A Canyon Ridge last week and earned
some votes in the 3A poll with their third straight win. Sugar-Salem sits at
No. 3 in the 3A poll with the Diggers' only loss coming to 4A Preston. Potato
harvest started in eastern Idaho this week, so the Diggers, named for that
annual rite of Idaho farmers, may be a little weary. Lake City at Post Falls: The Post Falls Trojans have been outscoring opponents by 40 points per
game in rolling to a 4-0 mark and the state's No. 3 ranking in 5A. Lake City
comes in at 1-2, but one of those losses was to top-ranked Capital, and the
Timberwolves will be up for this rivalry game. Shoshone at Hagerman:
The Shoshone Indians will be riding high after last week's big win over Oakley.
The Hagerman Pirates are 3-2 and definite underdogs this week, but they could
pull an upset at home. Jerome at Minico:
The Spartans are better than their 2-2 record indicates and could prove it this
week. One of Minico's losses was by a narrow 13-6 margin against top-ranked
Bishop Kelly. Jerome has won its last two after starting 0-3, and the Tigers
could jump into the Great Basin West playoff race with an upset. Nyssa, Ore., at Butte County: Butte County has been the class of the Nuclear Conference so far and
sits at No. 4 in the 2A rankings with a 5-0 record. The Pirates will get a
stern test against Nyssa, Ore., which should only help Butte County in the
state playoffs. |

Running the Right Way Salmon's Alice Keller shows why cross country is a team sport
By: Alex Calinsky, alex@idahosports.com
Alice Keller talks after her race at the Bob Firman Invitational at Eagle Island State Park on Saturday. | SALMON -
Moments before interviewing Salmon's Alice Keller for this story, the
runners in the Bob Firman Invitational appeared from amongst the trees
and were headed straight toward her. "Just a sec," she said. She got up and
jogged over to the rope, cheering for each of the runners she knew
passing by.
It wasn't an inconvenience at all. In fact, it was refreshing. Alice Keller gets it.
In
a sports culture obsessed with winning at all costs, personal
rivalries, and obnoxious fans, sportsmanship has become endangered. Without competition and the drive to succeed, athletics aren't the
same. Finding the balance is the crucial part.
Keller
loves to win and has done so repeatedly, but does not allow her
competitive fire to consume her. "I love the competition and that's my
favorite [part of cross country]. I'm a very competitive person and
everyone is so nice in cross country. They're all very caring and they
care about how you run, yet they are your competitors. It just keeps me
happy."
For
those around the Salmon area, that's the way it is. "We all
know each other and we cheer for each other even if they're not on our
team."
Keller,
a junior, entered the 'Elite' race at the Bob Firman Invitational and
despite finishing further back than she's used to, kept it in
perspective. "It was definitely a challenge and it was kind of hard to
watch people in front of me beating me by such a big space, but it was
good for me and I needed it.
"I'm
glad I entered into it because it was more challenging and made me a
better runner. You get faster times automatically without really knowing
it and it gets your body and mind used to it."
The
Salmon star's brothers got her into distance running and she trains in the summer
with her aunt, who ran in college and qualified for the NCAA
Championships. "She keeps me serious about running and
keeps me progressing. She's like my second coach."
Wherever
Keller runs, there are others around her supporting her, and vice
versa. Despite being an individual sport at its core, Keller knows all
about the team aspect. "It is individual, but it is also such a big team
sport. People don't realize the team makes a big difference.
It
has been hard without many girls on the team. All the boys are proud of
me and they cheer for me all the time...they've helped me get through a
lot."
Keller
is a threat to finish first on any course she runs, but does so with
many people alongside her. The support she receives and distributes goes
farther than any race she will run and provides an example of what real
sportsmanship looks like. |
