Richie Teo - Pocatello High School
Get To Know Richie Teo, a senior at Pocatello High School. Even though he only started playing football as a freshman after moving from his homeland of Samoa, Richie is captain of the Indians footbal squad. He loves to fish on his brother's boat and BBQ (who doesn't?) but make sure you don't get in between him and the TV when the Lion King is on or you'll learn in a hurry why he starts at middle line-backer for the Indians. read more... | To nominate someone that you think we should "Get To Know!" Idaho Football Games of the Week
Last Week: Rocky Mountain spoiled our pick for Game of the Week by routing Meridian 35-7, but that game will always be bigger than the final score. We had you on the lookout for Soda Springs' big win over Bear Lake and Shelley improving to 2-0 in its first season competing in the 4A ranks.
Game(s) of the Week
Rocky Mountain Rumble: After staying conventional the first two weeks, we'll pick an entire quadruple-header (is that a word?). Four Idaho teams entertain two squads from Canada and two from Colorado at Holt Arena in Pocatello on Saturday September 11th.
The 2008 5A champion, Highland (Pocatello) entertains Notre Dame out of Calgary, Alberta Canada. We're wondering if the Canadian teams will go for it on fourth down or just scratch their heads? Most schools in Canada use rules adapted from the Canadian Football League, which has just three downs and a 110-yard field among its alterations of the U.S. version of football.
Highland plays its third straight game against out-of-state competition after opening with two losses against Utah teams. The Rams will need some momentum before top-ranked Eagle comes to town Sept. 17. Raymond HS from north of the border will meet Blackfoot, the No. 2 team in 4A, while Shelley, off to a 2-0 start in its first year as a 4A school, takes on the Skiers from Aspen, Colo. (yes, it's true - the Russets vs. the Skiers). The fourth match-up pits Minico against Elizabeth, Colo.
If you can't make it to Holt Arena in Pocatello on Saturday, you can still watch all the action live on IdahoSports.com GameStreams.
Runner-Up Game of the Week
Twin Falls at Canyon Ridge: Not even the Times-News' "Bruin-Hawk Man" would have predicted a battle of unbeaten teams when the Bruins and River Hawks collide in a battle for supremacy in Twin Falls. The Bruins' defense has been impressive as Twin Falls has rolled to a 2-0 record after last week's shutout of Nampa. Canyon Ridge, in just its second season, opened the 2010 campaign with a 27-12 win over 3A Filer and will be looking to get some sweet revenge for last year's 55-7 loss to Twin Falls during the inaugural rivalry game.
Honorable Mention
Mountain View at Centennial: The Mavericks opened the season with a 27-20 over Lake City with freshman Kai Turner at quarterback leading a young group. Centennial gave top-ranked Eagle a test before falling 42-24 last week and will be looking to bounce back in the 5A Southern Idaho Conference.
Butte County at West Jefferson: The Nuclear Conference season opens with Butte County looking like the team to beat. The Pirates are 2-0 and ranked No. 5 in 2A with wins over Cole Valley and Gooding. West Jefferson is 0-2, but both losses came against 3A schools South Fremont and Salmon.
Hansen at Castleford: The 1A Division 1 Hansen Huskies have opened 2-0 with wins over Camas County and Lighthouse Christian. The task gets tougher this week as the Castleford Wolves enter Week 3 as the No. 1 team in the state in 1A Division 2. The Wolves' offense was impressive in a 56-34 victory over Hagerman to open the season.
Declo at Kimberly: The Declo Hornets are ranked No. 1 in 2A, but they squeaked past Aberdeen 24-21 last week. The Hornets step up in competition this week to take on 3A Kimberly, which fell 46-41 to American Falls last week. |

Magic Valley Game of the Week: Middleton at Jerome By: Scott Burton
These two worlds collide this Friday in Jerome, as the "old school" Wing T meets the "new school" spread offense in a speed up, slow down, where the heck is the football type of game. When Jerome has the football, be ready for a track meet. When Middleton has the ball, be ready for "Where's Waldo."

Keeping up with Jones: Garden Valley's outside hitter spreading intensity
GARDEN VALLEY - When Garden
Valley second-year
volleyball coach Kristin Goff asked Chancey Jones to change positions heading
into her senior year, Jones didn't balk. In fact, Jones elevated her game. "We really needed
someone who could be more powerful and consistent hitting on the outside," Goff
said. "She's been working hard and is fitting into that role nicely for us." But don't expect
Jones and her competitive nature to bask in a compliment too long. "The transition to
outside hasn't been too difficult," said Jones, who started as a middle hitter
a year ago. "I still haven't got to the point where I hit line consistently,
but I'm getting there." Blame her competitive
nature on growing up in a family with seven siblings - five of which were boys
- and being No. 6 in the pecking order. "In our family,
everything was a competition," Jones said. "I like it that way, too. We all
pushed each other to be better in a very healthy way. I think that experience
growing up has helped me when I'm playing sports." It also accounts for
Jones' ferocious intensity, something Goff hopes becomes contagious this
season. "I want Chancey's
intensity to spread to the rest of the team," Goff said. "When she's on the
court, she's very intense. She knows where everybody is supposed to be and
keeps them in their proper rotation. In that sense, you couldn't ask for a
better leader." Jones finds herself
on a senior-laden team for Garden
Valley that is tightly
knit and full of leaders. "I think we've really
come together this season because we spent a lot of time together in the
summer," Jones said. "This is a small school and we had never been to a team
volleyball camp before. But this summer, we went to one and we've grown closer
because of it." That closer bond became evident last week when one
of Jones' teammates was grieving the loss of her grandmother. "Our whole team just
rallied around her and tried to help her in whatever way we could," Jones said.
"That's what is different about this team over last year's team." Without good
chemistry, Jones said "the wheels came off" in Garden Valley's
fifth-place finish in the season tournament. But Jones thinks her team might
have a chance to take home a bigger piece of hardware. "It's
awesome to know that everyone around you is really your friend," said Jones,
who got her feet wet at outside hitter earlier this season against 2A and 3A
schools - and won. "We definitely have our ups and downs like anyone, but you
know other people have your back. That's very reassuring." |
