Small Town Football
There's nothing quite like small town football-the hype, the tailgating,
and the people lined up on the fence who refuse to conform their
experience to bleachers. This is what's on tap this Friday night as
Hagerman and Oakley become the feature on Idahosports.com and the Magic
Valley Game of the Week. Make sure you tune in every Friday at 3:20 p.m. to KTIK 1350-AM in Boise or at KTIK.com to hear Jason Chatraw on Idaho Sports Talk with Jeff Caves and Mike Prater! If you've got a story idea about an athlete, coach, event or anything else you think other sports fans would enjoy reading about, please submit them to us at editor@idahosports.com

Going Places Rocky's Megan Sorenson combines talent with hard work
By: Alex Calinsky, alex@idahosports.com
MERIDIAN -
Many people say they have a "strong work ethic," yet fewer people show
it. People gather to watch when that trait combines with talent, and for
Rocky Mountain's Megan Sorenson, both come naturally.
The
Grizzlies' senior outside hitter reigns at the net with screaming
spikes and unforgiving defense. She is one of the top-100 players in the
nation according to both PrepVolleyball.com and Under Armour and is
also in consideration to be an All-American, but she is not limited to
only a volleyball prowess.
Involved
in track, Key Club, National Honor Society, and Eagle Christian Church,
the "strong work ethic" floods all aspects of her life. She also leads a
team that is arguably the favorite to win the 5A State Championship
this year.
"We
worked really hard in practice and we could tell that we were even
better than we were last year, so we knew that if we just play well we
can win," Sorenson says. Last season the Grizzlies lost to Eagle in the
finals of the state tournament, but have taken out their frustration on
the rest of the conference this year.
With
the high expectations of Sorenson's final season came an obstacle that
was difficult for her to overcome. Leading vocally is a skill that she
possessed but needed to refine.
"I'm
not one to talk a lot. I knew that I had to, so I had to force myself
to. I practiced talking in practice so it would just come in the games
and I wouldn't have to focus on it," explains Sorenson.
"Megan
day-in and day-out is the hardest working kid in the gym. Her attitude
is infectious...and in turn other players work hard as well," says Rocky
Mountain coach Michelle Dodds, who also coaches the club team Sorenson
plays for.
Over
the summer, she verbally committed to play volleyball for Concordia
University in Irvine, California and also accomplished an impressive
athletic feat with her diligence-finishing the Spudman triathlon.
"This
summer my best friend and I decided we were going to do a triathlon so
we trained all summer long and then did it. It was hard! I just wanted
to finish!" declares Sorenson, who took 3rd place in her division for the race.
Whether
it is bringing the thunder to the volleyball court or engaging in one
of her many endeavors off of it, persistence and humbleness will take
her and Rocky Mountain far.
"God has left me with a lot and I just work hard and practice. My teammates are really good so it makes me look good too." |

Week 7: Games of the Week
By: Chris Wood, chris@idahosports.com
Last Week:
Coeur d'Alene knocked off
then-No. 1 and undefeated Rocky Mountain 34-22 to emerge as the new team to
beat in the 5A ranks. The Vikings' defense held the Grizzlies in check and
forced four turnovers while the offense racked up over 400 yards.
Lake City
edged previously undefeated Post Falls 22-21 in another big 5A game. Bishop
Kelly remained undefeated in the 4A ranks by outlasting a stubborn Skyview
team, 15-13. Minico continued to gain steam in 4A with a 43-19 win over Jerome.
Weiser won its second straight big game in the 3A Snake River Valley Conference
with an impressive 38-14 victory over Homedale. Fruitland romped past Parma
44-2 to remain undefeated and No. 1 in the state in 3A. Butte County continued
its impressive run in 2A by traveling across the state and into Oregon to
defeat Nyssa, 22-13. Hagerman ran past Shoshone 48-28 to make things very
interesting in the 1A Snake River North and South divisions.
Game of the Week Salmon River at Garden
Valley: The scoreboard operator should get a workout as Salmon River and
Garden Valley battle for the top spot in the 1A Division II Long Pin Conference
race. The defending state champion Salmon River Savages have averaged 36.6
points per game while going 5-1. The Wolverines have been even more explosive
at 55.2 points per game and a low output of 52 while rolling to a 5-0 record
and No. 1 ranking in the state. Honorable MentionsShelley at Hillcrest: The winner
remains undefeated in 4A High Country Conference play and has the inside track
for a state playoff berth.Shelley remains unbeaten against Idaho teams in its inaugural season at
the 4A level. Coeur d'Alene
at Vallivue: The
Vikings don't have much time to celebrate their win over top-ranked Rocky
Mountain with a trip south to face Vallivue this week. Junior quarterback Chad
Chalich threw fourth touchdown passes last week, and senior running back Zach
Keiser led the Vikings' ground game with 162 yards. Vallivue has averaged 51.4
points per game while rolling to a 5-0 mark, but the Falcons have yet to be
tested against a winning team. Homedale
at Parma: Third
place in the 3A Snake River Valley Conference isn't bad, and the winner of this
game will move into that spot behind Fruitland and Weiser. The Trojans and
Panthers are both coming off lopsided losses to those two league leaders. Hagerman
at Oakley: The
division leaders in the 1A D1 Snake River Conference do battle. Hagerman is
coming off a big win over North Division rival Shoshone, 48-28. The Oakley
Hornets are leading the South division, but they lost to Shoshone. Boise vs. Timberline
(Thursday at BSU) and Borah vs. Capital (Friday at BSU): The blue turf
hosts consecutive rivalry games. The first is a chance for Boise to notch its
first win of the season against Timberline, which has just one victory. The
Friday tilt has undefeated Capital trying to keep its record clean against
longtime rival Borah, which comes in at 3-2.Rocky
Mountain at Centennial: The Grizzlies try to rebound from their first loss of the season
against rival Centennial. The Patriots have won four straight since an opening
loss to Eagle and look to continue a roll to the 5A state playoffs. Lake
City at Lewiston:
This is a key battle in the scramble for playoff berths out of the Inland
Empire. Lake City is riding high after stunning Post Falls last week. Lewiston
is 4-1, but the Bengals' loss was the only victory so far for Meridian. Pocatello
vs. Preston (Holt Arena): Preston is the home team on paper despite this game being played in
Pocatello's Holt Arena. Pocatello is 5-0 with some close calls. Preston is 3-2
with narrow losses to Hillcrest and Shelley. The winner moves to the front of
the 4A Great Basin East standings. West Side at Aberdeen: West Side is 5-0 and leading the state's 2A rankings, but the Pirates
open Southeast Idaho Conference play on the road against the 2-3 Tigers, who
are better than their record indicates. |
