Preston scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter and held Bishop Kelly scoreless for nearly the final three minutes en route to a 4A Real Dairy Shootout state championship, 42-37.
The Indians started quickly, taking a 13-4 lead in the first quarter, before an 8-0 run by Bishop Kelly got the Knights within a point. From that point on, it was a tight contest that Bishop Kelly tied on a shot in the closing seconds of the fourth quarter. But Preston got the next seven points before a Max Rice three got Bishop Kelly back to within two points, 39-37, with 2:53 to play.
But that was it for Bishop Kelly. Jacob Russell missed a tough layup in traffic with 59 seconds to go that would have tied the game before two Austin Smellie free throws and another free throw by Couper Carson put the game out of reach. Preston post player Brayden Parker had 16 points and 15 rebounds in the win.
The Knights finished runner-up in the 4A Real Dairy Shootout in both the boys and girls tournaments after winning the 4A State Football Championship in the fall.
