With the girls 'Real Dairy Shootout' in the books, it's time to reflect on all that happened from Feb. 18-20. Let's just say that a LOT happened and that the tournament was an absolute blast!
First things first, I want to commend and thank Nampa High School athletic director Ty Thomas for putting on a great tournament. As I understand it, this was his first year running the show at Nampa HS after longtime athletic director John Gregory retired last year... and he did a fantastic job! (John even helped out with this year's tournament). I, along with my broadcast partner Will Nordquist, were very appreciative of Ty and his staff in accommodating us as well.
I also want to congratulate all of the teams who played in the tournament on a job well done. We saw great individual and team performances throughout the three days of the tournament and it was a joy to watch.
Before I get to the all-tournament teams, I just want to point out that this is an IdahoSports.com All-Tournament Team. It is not in any way, shape, or form an official publication of the IHSAA. These teams are comprised of players who played in the 1AD2 Girls 'Real Dairy Shootout'.
1AD2 State Champion: Richfield Tigers
1AD2 State Runner-Up: Dietrich Blue Devils
1AD2 State Third Place: Salmon River Savages
1AD2 State Consolation: Lakeside Knights
Individual Performance of the Tournament: Lakeside's Lillian Rhea vs. Rockland - Game 1
Lillian had an absolute MONSTER game in Lakeside's overtime loss to Rockland in the very first game of the tournament. She scored 33 points, grabbed 23 rebounds, with 2 steals and a blocked shot. Her performance came 4 points shy of the 1AD2 state record of 37 points scored in single game set by Summit Academy's Savanah Prigge back in 2012. She was also four total points away from the overall scoring record, set by Carey's Jade Parke back in 2013.
Individual Play of the Tournament: Lakeside's Corin Peone vs. Rockland - Game 1
There were several great individual plays during the tournament, but the one that sticks out to me the most also came in the first game of the tournament. Lakeside was down 3 points with 5.4 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Lakeside had the ball out of bounds 84 feet away from the hoop. Lillian Rhea inbounded to Rachael Arthur, who drove to half-court and passed to Peone on the left wing on the arc and hoisted a shot just before time expired... and she banked it in to send the game to overtime! A great shot... and a great start to the tournament.
Best Game of the Tournament: Dietrich vs. Salmon River - Game 6
With a spot in the state championship game on the line, both Dietrich and Salmon River brought the intensity to their state semi-final matchup. Both Will and I agreed that this game was the most intense, back-and-forth, what-you-can-do-I-can-do-better type of game that we saw during the tournament. Just as one team would make a big bucket to take the lead, the other team would answer with an even bigger shot to regain that lead. A fantastic game all-around!
