Just like the season, it was allMountain View in the 5A girls basketball championship game.
The Mavericks started hot, had a blipin the middle, and cruised down the stretch to beat Boise 66-53 andwin the program’s first girls basketball championship.
Destiny Slocum scored 25 points andpulled in 10 rebounds and six assists to lead the Mavericks to thetitle, avenging their only loss – Boise beat them in the districttournament.
“I think thatended up being a blessing. They’re a team that pushes us beyond ourlimits and forces us to change our mindset,” said Slocum. “It’sstrange; I’ve always been at this game in the stands wishing it wasme, and now it is.”
Renee Routhier had 19 points tosupplement the Mountain View offense. Alyssa Case added nine pointsand Taeli Carrillo had eight.
Mountain View started out hot, going up16 in the second quarter before the Braves hit a run to make itclose.
Boise trimmed the deficit to four inthe final stages of the second quarter but couldn’t get any closerthan that the rest of the way as the lead hovered between 7 and 10points for the majority of the second half.
While the Braves kept pressing for arun that never came, the Mavericks eventually pulled away late to putan exclamation point on one of the best seasons in recent Idahohistory.
“We were just calm and knew what weneeded to do, which was play great team basketball,” said Routhier.
The Mavericks broke the 5A tournamentscoring record, piling up 205 points to break a 24-year-old recordheld by Coeur d’Alene.
In the loss for Boise, Mandy Simpsonhad 21 points and 15 rebounds, Isabelle Hadden had 13 points and 10rebounds, and Megan Lee added 12 points and nine rebounds.
