Just like the season, it was all Mountain View in the 5A girls basketball championship game.
The Mavericks started hot, had a blip in the middle, and cruised down the stretch to beat Boise 66-53 and win the program’s first girls basketball championship.
Destiny Slocum scored 25 points and pulled in 10 rebounds and six assists to lead the Mavericks to the title, avenging their only loss – Boise beat them in the district tournament.
“I think that ended up being a blessing. They’re a team that pushes us beyond our limits and forces us to change our mindset,” said Slocum. “It’s strange; I’ve always been at this game in the stands wishing it was me, and now it is.”
Renee Routhier had 19 points to supplement the Mountain View offense. Alyssa Case added nine points and Taeli Carrillo had eight.
Mountain View started out hot, going up 16 in the second quarter before the Braves hit a run to make it close.
Boise trimmed the deficit to four in the final stages of the second quarter but couldn’t get any closer than that the rest of the way as the lead hovered between 7 and 10 points for the majority of the second half.
While the Braves kept pressing for a run that never came, the Mavericks eventually pulled away late to put an exclamation point on one of the best seasons in recent Idaho history.
“We were just calm and knew what we needed to do, which was play great team basketball,” said Routhier.
The Mavericks broke the 5A tournament scoring record, piling up 205 points to break a 24-year-old record held by Coeur d’Alene.
In the loss for Boise, Mandy Simpson had 21 points and 15 rebounds, Isabelle Hadden had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and Megan Lee added 12 points and nine rebounds.
