District 1 & 2 Playoff Race Breakdown
Who will represent the Northern region of Idaho in the 2014 IHSAA State Football Championships?
Published: 10/20/2014 11:39:39 PM

5A Inland Empire League
*Note: There is an 'at-large' berth available for the best remaining 5A team throughout the state. (meaning one team from North, East, or West will be chosen to play in the state tournament). Please remember this information as you read the scenarios below. There is a chance that a team from the scenarios below is chosen as the at-large bid.

Four teams in the conference, only two will make it out alive. Only Lake City has clinched a playoff berth (seed 1-2A), as they own the top seed for winning the IEL.

This week, Coeur d'Alene is at Post Falls while Lake City travels to Lewiston. Lewiston has been eliminated from playoff contention. Here are the scenarios:

If Coeur d'Alene wins: Coeur d'Alene takes seed 1-2B, Post Falls is eliminated.
If Coeur d'Alene loses: Post Falls takes seed 1-2B, Coeur d'Alene is eliminated.

4A Inland Empire League
*Note: There is an 'at-large' berth available on the state tournament brackets, however this berth can only go to the best remaining team from District 3 or 4.

Three teams in the conference with only one game to go. Sandpoint has wrapped up their league schedule with a 1-1 record. Now they sit and wait to see what Lakeland and Moscow will do this week as the Hawks and Bears square off. Here are the scenarios:

If Lakeland wins: Lakeland takes seed 1-2A and Sandpoint takes seed 1-2B. Moscow is eliminated.
If Moscow wins: 3-way tie for first place between Lakeland, Sandpoint, and Moscow.

3A Intermountain Conference
Four teams in the conference and two will move on to the postseason. Only one playoff berth has been secured, that being Timberlake with seed 1-2A as they have won the conference title.

This week, Bonners Ferry is at Timberlake and Kellogg is at Priest River. Bonners Ferry has been eliminated. Here are the scenarios:

If Priest River wins: Priest River takes seed 1-2B. Kellogg is eliminated.
If Kellogg wins: Kellogg takes seed 1-2B. Priest River is eliminated.

2A Central Idaho Conference
Three teams in the conference and all three will move on to the postseason. It's just a matter of which order the teams will finish.

Only one game on tap this week as St. Maries hosts Orofino. Grangeville completed their regular season last week vs. Gooding. Here are the scenarios:

If Orofino wins: Orofino takes seed 1-2A, Grangeville takes seed 1-2B, and St. Maries takes seed 1-2C.
If St. Maries wins: 3-way tie for first place between Orofino, Grangeville, and St. Maries.

1AD1 White Pine League
Seven teams in the conference with four playoff berths available. We know which teams have clinched a berth: Prairie, Troy, Kamiah, and Genesee. Positioning can still change in the last week, but it's sure to be a good race to the finish.

Technically, there are 5 playoff berths available to the state tournament for the combined District 1-2, but the fifth playoff berth (seed 1-2E) automatically goes to Wallace. The Miners did not play in a conference this year and did not join the White Pine League to play alongside their 1AD1 counterparts in the North region. As a result, they are given the last playoff berth available for District 1-2 to the 1st round (technically, the play-in round).

This week, Kamiah is at Prairie, Clearwater Valley is at Troy, and Potlatch is at Lapwai. Genesee completed their season and will be seed 1-2D. Potlatch, Clearwater Valley, and Lapwai have been eliminated. Here are the scenarios:

If Prairie wins and Troy wins: Prairie is seed 1-2A, Troy is seed 1-2B, Kamiah is seed 1-2C.
If Prairie wins and Troy loses: Prairie is seed 1-2A, Troy is seed 1-2B, Kamiah is seed 1-2C.
If Prairie loses and Troy wins: 3-way tie for first place between Prairie, Kamiah, and Troy.
If Prairie loses and Troy loses: Kamiah is seed 1-2A, Prairie is seed 1-2B, Troy is seed 1-2C.

1AD2 White Star League
Eight teams in this combined District 1-2 conference, yet only two will advance on to the state tournament. This playoff scenario is rather tricky, since most teams in the league still have two games remaining.

This we do know: Clark Fork, Lewis County, Mullan, and Kootenai have all been eliminated from postseason play. That leaves four schools vying for two berths.

This week, Deary is at Lakeside while Kendrick is at Timberline. With two weeks left in the regular season, we'll break down the scenarios just for this current week:

If Deary wins and Kendrick wins: Deary and Kendrick clinch the two playoff berths and then play each other to determine the conference champion on Oct. 31.
If Deary wins and Kendrick loses: Deary clinches a playoff berth, forcing Kendrick to beat Deary on Oct. 31, all while hoping Timberline loses vs. Clark Fork on the same night. If Kendrick loses on Oct. 31, Timberline takes seed 1-2B and Kendrick is eliminated.
If Deary loses and Kendrick wins: Kendrick clinches a playoff berth, forcing Deary to beat Kendrick on Oct. 31 to clinch a playoff spot in what would be the conference championship game. If Deary loses, Lakeside gets seed 1-2B and Deary is eliminated.
If Deary loses and Kendrick loses: 3-way tie for first place between Deary, Kendrick, and Timberline. Lakeside is still waiting in the wings with a 5-2 record, meaning the results of the OCt. 31 games determine who moves on and who stays home.
