Friday night was NOT a good night weather-wise for football, not only in East Idaho, but in other certain parts of the state. From postponements to cancellations, it was a wild affair.
Here are some brief thoughts on Week Four games involving East Idaho teams.
Highland 13, Coeur d'Alene 10
Another classic game between these two 5A powerhouses. Highland gets a stop at the half yard line with 9 seconds left, and Coeur d'Alene couldn't get back to the line in time to get another play off. I have a feeling we'll see these two match up against this season.
Blackfoot vs. Madison - CANCELLED
After a rain/thunder/lightning delay that lasted until 7:52 p.m., the Buck Bowl officially kicked off. After only a quarter and a half, the skies opened up again, forcing the cancellation of the game. Blackfoot led at the time 15-3.
Hillcrest 26, Idaho Falls 10
This game was called in the third quarter. Morgan Pyper dominated all around for the Knights. But he, himself, told the Post Register his success wouldn't have come without the play of the O-Line. Can Hillcrest make a run to the playoffs? Idaho Falls just can't find a groove.
Rigby vs. Bonneville - CANCELLED
The Trojans and Bees endured delays of their own thanks to the weather. Rigby led Bonneville 21-14 at halftime before the game was called due to the thunderstorms.
Skyline 28, Century 6
Fortunately for Skyline, they played indoors at Holt Arena on Friday night. Unfortunately for Century, not a whole lot has changed for their season... they just can't score any points. Skyline effectively and methodically pick the Diamondbacks apart.
Pocatello 26, Preston 22
Kudos to the Poky players for being able to overcome the distraction of the indefinite suspension of head coach Tom Harrison to not only get the win... but a BIG conference win at that. The victory puts Pocatello in the playoff picture. The loss for Preston has to be disappointing.
South Fremont 24, Teton 6
This game didn't finish until 11:20 p.m. because of the weather delays. But in the end, the Cougars picked up their first conference victory of the Chad Hill era and may have put themselves in position to go to the playoffs. Teton has one more conference game (at Sugar-Salem on Oct. 10). They NEED a win to stay in contention. A loss and they are out of the playoffs.
Snake River 14, Jerome 0
A slow start again for Snake River. Wyatt Vogler came up big in the second half, scoring both Panthers TD's. Snake River must play much better this week, as the Shelley Russets come to town in a potential playoff preview.
Bear Lake 17, Marsh Valley 9
This game featured not one, not two, but three SAFETIES. It's unlikely as is to see a safety in a game, let alone three of them. While Bear Lake gets a win over old-3A foe Marsh Valley, the Bears need to tighten up some spots in preparation for the 2A SEIC schedule.
Gooding 49, American Falls 12
The Senators led 42-0 at halftime in this one. The Beavers have really struggled overall. There's not much else to say about this one.
Aberdeen 26, Malad 0
The Tigers shut down the potent Malad offense and made a case for their Oct. 17 date at West Side to potentially be the 2A Game of the Year. Malad has some regrouping to do, but are still very much in playoff contention.
West Side 44, Soda Springs 6
The Cardinals lack of offensive firepower has really hurt them this season. Going up against West Side's defense is a tall order. Soda Springs will probably need to beat Malad and Bear Lake to have a shot at the postseason.
North Fremont 18, West Jefferson 12
It was a close one right down to the wire. The game was tied 6-6 at half, 12-12 after the 3rd quarter, and then there was a 45-minute lightning delay. The Huskies punched in the game-winning TD on 4th-and-1 late in regulation. The Huskies D came up big against West Jefferson's double wing. This was a costly loss for the Panthers.
Salmon 36, Ririe 29
This game also did not finish until 11 pm. Ririe led most of the game until two late fourth quarter touchdowns by Salmon sealed the game. Salmon's win also put them in playoff contention, while the opportunities for Ririe to pick up a 'W' are starting to thin out.
Butte County 79, Challis 36
This one was never close. The Pirates led 28-0 after the first quarter and had THREE players reach 100+ rushing yards, including two that went for more than 150 (Jeremie Hjelm (200) and Zac Harrell (184)). Is the conference Butte County's to lose?
Watersprings Christian 54, Mackay 24
A big miss on the part of Mackay and a huge win for Watersprings. The Miners seemed to be the favorite in the Sawtooth East Division prior to this game... I'm not so sure about that anymore. Watersprings ran off 44 unanswered points during the second half.
Billings Christian 42, Clark County 22
Billings Christian just outmuscled Clark County over the course of the game. While the Bobcats hung tough with Billings, they just couldn't keep up in the end. However, Tresten Eddins played very well for Clark County.
Rockland 48, North Gem 6
It was run, run, and run some more for Rockland. They attempted just six passes, completing only one of them... an area the Bulldogs will certainly need to improve in before the playoffs. The Cowboys season seems to be falling apart.
Teams with a Bye: Shelley, Sugar-Salem, Firth, Grace
