Week Two of the high school football season is upon us (in reality, it's Week Three... practically EVERYONE plays on Zero Week now) and after this week's action, we will know more-so which teams could be contenders in their respective districts. Even though district play for most hasn't begun yet, we can learn a lot from the non-conference matchups.
On my sports radio show "The Hurricane Harris Hour" on NewsTalk 97.7 FM/690 AM in East Idaho, I normally keep the boundaries of teams I talk about to Districts 5/6 for the “Hot 5” segment. However, for this week, I'm going to dive into a couple of matchups outside of the eastern portion of the state. There were just too many good games to choose from this week.
1. Timberline (2-0) at Bishop Kelly (2-0), Friday at 7 pm.
The T'Wolves and the Knights currently hold the top 2 spots in the IdahoSports.com Power Rankings for 5A/4A, respectively. BK is ranked #1 in the 4A media poll, while Timberline is just outside the Top 5 in 5A. The T'Wolves beat Boise 44-17 last week, while BK got past Vallivue 35-21. The general assumption seems to be that the Knights are expected to be at the top each and every year. That hasn't been the case for Timberline for the most part, but they could really turn some heads this week if they can knock off BK. I'm not sure if one would call it an upset if the T'Wolves defeated Bishop Kelly, since Timberline is in the bigger classification, but it would go a long ways to putting the 5A SIC West #1 Division on notice about their intentions and abilities this season.
2. Canyon Ridge (2-0) at Emmett (0-2), Friday at 7 pm.
Emmett's record is deceiving as their two losses to Kuna and Middleton, respectively, came by a total of 8 points. With Kuna and Middleton expecting to contend in the 4A SIC this year, it goes to show how well 3A Emmett is playing against much larger schools. The Huskies will once again play a larger opponent this week in the surprising Canyon Ridge Riverhawks. For the first time in school history, the Riverhawks have started a season 2-0. With wins over Mountain Home and Buhl, Canyon Ridge is showing their vast improvement over last season. Even though it's said that a 4A school should beat a 3A school, Canyon Ridge beating Emmett would give the Riverhawks plenty of confidence moving forward and make a statement to the Great Basin (West) Conference that CRHS can contend for the conference crown and a playoff spot.
3. Manti, UT (2-1) at Shelley (2-0), Friday at 7 pm.
The Russets have the opportunity to avenge their only loss of the past two years: a 21-0 drubbing at the hands of the Manti Templars. While the game conditions may or may not have played a factor last year (torrential rain, wind, thunder, etc.), the forecast for Friday’s rematch is cool, but clear. Manti is a consistent contender in the Beehive State. They won two straight 2A titles in 2012/2013 and came up just short in the 3A title game last year vs. Judge Memorial of Salt Lake City. Meanwhile, Shelley is looking to make more noise of their own. After shutting out Faith Lutheran from Las Vegas, the Russets whipped Teton 40-7. This game should be a great litmus test to see where the Russets stand moving forward.
4. Snake River (1-0) at Sugar-Salem (1-1), Friday at 7 pm.
This week’s ‘East Idaho Game Night’ presented by Local News 8’s SportsLine, IdahoSports.com, and Z103 visits Sugar City where the Diggers are hosting the Snake River Panthers in a non-conference matchup. However, these two teams may know more about each other than they do about teams in their own conference: they’ve played six times since 2010, including twice in the playoffs (Snake River won both games). Five of the last six games have come down to eight points or less, including last year’s 7-6 barnburner at Harrison Field. The Diggers have a new offense this year and a new head coach in Tyler Richins. A win against Snake River would be HUGE for the Sugar-Salem. Meanwhile, the Panthers have opened up their offense a bit as well, romping to several aerial TD’s vs. South Fremont two weeks ago. This game will be broadcast LIVE on IdahoSports.com.
5. Skyview (1-1) at Madison (1-1), Saturday at 7 pm.
This will be a big night for the Bobcats. Not only is it homecoming, but Madison’s opponent is no slouch. Skyview is expected to contend for the 4A SIC crown once again this season. The Hawks’ first two games this season have come against Mojave, NV (lost 48-40 in one of more entertaining games of the Rocky Mountain Rumble) and Post Falls (a 26-20 win). They can move the football down the field effectively and quickly. The Bobcats meanwhile hung tough with Capital to open the season before losing 35-21. Last week, they kicked off the conference schedule with a 20-6 win vs. Bonneville. Skyview has had their issues on special teams, a place in which the Bobcats need to excel. A Madison victory would be another nice step for a program coming off of a 3-6 season and a certain confidence boost for the Bobcats. If Skyview comes away with the win, it will be because they shut down the Madison passing attack, plain and simple. If you can’t make it to the game, listen on 97.7 FM/690 AM or online at eastidahonews.com.
