Zero Week is in the books and the high school football season is officially underway. Lots of good football was played over the weekend and I'm sure we will see much more quality football to come.
It's tough to gauge early-on the fortunes of a team. In college football, if your team loses their first game, lots of people overreact and claim the season is lost. In high school football, sometimes it can be that way too. My intent isn't to overreact here... but we only have one week of the season completed, so bear with me.
Actually, instead of bearing with me, I want YOU to tell me your thoughts and observations from Zero Week. Just post them in the comments section below. I should note that a lot of my observations come from East Idaho. That's because, well, I live here. Along with that, if I didn't talk about your team, don't be offended... just add to the conversation below!
Hillcrest vs. Rigby: After only winning four games in four years, new head coach Randy Waite and the Rigby Trojans collected an early season win against Hillcrest. The Knights have a lot of development to do within their offense, as the role of their quarterback shifts from “hand the ball off every down” to “make plays with feet and throw the ball”. Things are looking up in Rigby.
Madison vs. Riverton, UT: The defending 5A state champions graduated practically everyone from last season… and it showed against Riverton. The Bobcats mustered only three points offensively. They are very young this season and have two quarterbacks splitting time under center. They may be in the run for that second state berth from the 5A High Country Conference, but it’s going to be a dogfight to snatch it away from the other schools in the conference. That all being said, watch out for Madison: the future is bright.
Blackfoot vs. Idaho Falls: I believe this was the upset of the night. How many of you picked the Tigers to win this one (outside of IF fans)? Blackfoot is coming off of two straight 4A state championships. They have the history behind them. The program is strong. Yeah, they graduated a lot from last year, but they were supposed to beat Idaho Falls. The Tigers had other plans, unveiling a new no-huddle offense while steamrolling their way to a 40-14 lead in the 3rd quarter before nearly blowing the game and eventually winning 40-35. Lost in the woodwork of the tumultuous offseason in Idaho Falls were the 10 returning starters on both sides of the ball for the Tigers. Great win for Idaho Falls. Blackfoot needs to regroup.
Shelley vs. West Jordan, UT: Shelley lost some big playmakers from last season. Instead of rebuilding, they reloaded. The Russets showed that they are here to stay with a 28-6 win over a school three times their size. The defense is solid and the offense continued to click like it did last season. The Russets have a tough schedule ahead of them and need to make it out of that stretch with no injuries.
Bonneville vs. Skyline: The Bees had the advantage in this one, as they already had a game under their belts and had time to review mistakes and work to improve them. Tanner Smith and Lincoln Clayton torched the Grizzlies en route to a 30-point victory. Skyline needs to regroup quickly, as their schedule is not an easy one. They face Blackfoot this week, followed by a date with Century. We knew the secondary was going to be young for the Grizz, but 53 points is a lot to give up.
