What a great weekend of basketball all around! From Thursday’s tip-off at 1:15 p.m. at six different locations around the Treasure Valley to the final horn at around 9:45 p.m. on Saturday evening at the Idaho Center, it was a whirlwind of fantastic games, thrilling finishes, and all out fun.
I had the opportunity to cover the 1AD2 games at Caldwell High School this season. It was the second year in a row that I made my way to Caldwell to broadcast the games here on IdahoSports.com. And for the second year in a row, I was definitely pleased at the outcome.
It seems a lot of times that the smaller schools, especially in 1AD2, get overlooked. But when you go to a game at a smaller school or if you watch one online, you notice something different: Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, from those towns are there cheering on their team. It’s an event and vacation for most of these people… and they are PASSIONATE about it!
It was great to see the support from all of the fans in attendance. It was also cool to have many of you come up to us and say hello or how much you appreciated watching a previous broadcast at home. Things like that make it all worthwhile.
Clint Leech and I saw some great basketball this past weekend. We saw Salmon River bring home their first ever championship in school history and the first ever boys basketball title in Long Pin Conference history. We saw Nezperce calmly and effectively advance to their 4th straight state title game. We saw Kendrick battle their way through their first ever 1AD2 tournament, securing the 3rd Place trophy along the way. And we saw Dietrich battle all the way back from the brink of a 2-and-out elimination to win the Consolation trophy.
All in all, expect some big things from all eight participating tournament teams again next season. A lot of these teams, including Carey, Kootenai, and Mackay, bring back a lot of the same players again next season.
The pre-dominant storyline of the weekend was how many state tournament records were broken. Out of the 13 records that the IHSAA keeps track of, 11 of those records were broken while another one was tied. That means that 93% of the previous state tournament records were shattered or added to within a three-day span. That’s unbelievable! Here were the records that went down:
Team Records:
Most Points Scored In A Game: Kendrick with 78 points (Old record was North Gem with 75 in 2010)
Most Points In A Tournament: Dietrich with 216 (Old record was Nezperce with 175 in 2009)
Highest Point Average In A Tournament: Dietrich with 72.0 ppg (Old record was Nezperce with 58.3 in 2009)

Most Free Throws In A Game: Morgan Kerby of Kendrick and Dustin Rosenkrance of Mackay with 11 (Old record was held by J.C. Tucker of Garden Valley with 10)
Most Points In A Tournament: Nate Adamson of Carey with 75 (Old record was held by Kole Krosch of Mackay with 72)
