1. Zach Permann (Rockland)

With the Rocky Mountain Conference title on the line, the sophomore QB/DB rushed for 144 yards and four scores, threw for 265 yards and two scores, and added 12 tackles on defense as the Bulldogs defeated rival North Gem to secure the top seed from the district in the 1A playoffs.

2. Rawson Twitchell (Butte County)

Also with a conference title on the line (2A High Desert), the senior RB/LB rushed for 190 yards and two scores, added another touchdown receiving, and added a sack on defense as the Pirates knocked off rival Grace to secure an opening-round bye in the 2A state playoffs.

3. Julian Davis (Wallace)

Another conference title game (1A North Star) but the stakes were a little higher - win and you're in against Lakeside, lose and you're out of the playoff picture entirely.  The Miners staged a fourth quarter rally to tie the game with just two minutes to go when Davis intercepted a pass and returned it for the go-ahead score.  Then, with 30 seconds to play, he picked off another Lakeside pass to seal the deal.

2A Playoff Primer

Once Glenns Ferry toppled Murtaugh Friday night, most of the intrigue surrounding Sunday's playoff bracket unveiling was gone in the 2A classification.  The Pilots rode strong performances from Josiah Valencia and Bryce Sterling to secure the no. 6 seed in the opening round next week, where they'll travel to play Kamiah.  Once the opening round games have been played, the remaining eight teams will be re-seeded, one through eight, for the quarterfinal round.  The top overall seed, Butte County, will have a bye this week, as will Logos, Valley and Rimrock, who each won their conference championships.

1A Playoff Primer

Carey and Council, perhaps the two hottest teams in the 1A classification, will receive byes into the quarterfinals of the 1A playoffs.  So will North Star champ Wallace and Rocky Mountain champ Rockland (see above for details on both.)  Surprisingly, the RMC received three berths into the tournament (Rockland, North Gem, and Challis) and the Long Pin ended up with four (Council, Tri-Valley, Garden Valley, and Cascade.)  Meanwhile, Shoshone appears to have broken a nearly 25-year drought, qualifying for the postseason for the first time since 2000 and is seeking its first football playoff win since 1984 when the Indians travel to Garden Valley on Friday.

The "Game that Didn't Matter"

Lewis County and Timberline kicked off the final regular season game of the 1A season Saturday afternoon in Nezperce in a game that, for all intents and purposes, didn't matter beyond the teams on the field.  The night before, Deary defeated Genesee to secure the 1A Whitepine title.  Had Genesee won, Timberline had a chance to get itself into a three-way tie for a playoff spot.  Alas, it didn't happen.  But a great thing happened - the two teams, with nothing on the line beyond pride, put on a magnificent show for their fans and communities.  Lewis County won, 36-30, thanks to 221 yards rushing and three scores from sophomore Jace Cronce.  Eagles head coach Monty Moddrell praised the visiting Spartans for their effort and competitive drive even though they had bene eliminated the night before.  As Moddrell put it, "Timberline and us seem to always have bangers, regardless of the (playoff) implications."
