Team Idaho had another outstanding showing at Fargo Nationals

The year 2024 marks the 31st consecutive time that the 16U/Junior Nationals (aka, Fargo Nationals) has been conducted under the roof of the Fargo Dome on the campus of North Dakota State University. This year’s Fargo Nationals will go down in the history books as another solid performance by Team Idaho.

Since the first Junior level competition at the Fieldhouse on the campus of the University of Iowa in 1971, the tournament’s size has exponentially grown, especially since the addition of the girl’s divisions in the early 2000s. With the number of entries surpassing a record 7,000 in 2023 and just over 8,000 this year, the level of competition is at its best in all respective divisions. To sum it up, Fargo is among the largest age group tournaments in the world and a sneak preview of future NCAA Champions, All-Americans and Olympians.

2024 REGISTERED WRESTLER COUNT (Per USA Wrestling)

Junior Boys Freestyle: 1,816

Junior Girls Freestyle: 1,134

Junior Boys Greco-Roman: 1,310

16U Boys Freestyle: 1,698

16U Girls Freestyle: 828

16U Boys Greco-Roman: 1,260

TOTAL: 8,046

A question that I frequently encounter from people within my wrestling circle is what prep level tournament is the toughest in the land? My answer without hesitation is the Fargo Nationals. Yes, there are tier one tournaments, such as the Walsh Ironman in Ohio, Clovis “Doc” Buchanan in Central California, and the Super 32 in North Carolina to name a few. It would be like comparing apples to oranges because each of these tournaments attract the nation’s elite as does Fargo. Having said that, there is nothing like Fargo for a few reasons. For instance, it’s the largest age group tournament in the world that has 30 full size mats spanning the floor of the Fargo Dome. Secondly, Fargo is a week-long grind made up of several divisions (i.e., Junior and 16U for Freestyle, Greco, and Women’s), where a number of weight groups within these divisions have well over a hundred plus competitors (e.g., Matthew Martino’s Junior Freestyle weight group had approximately 150 entries). On top of that, for those wrestlers competing in both Freestyle and Greco, it is not uncommon to wrestle between 12 to 16 matches in a span of a week. The mental and physical fortitude it requires one to attempt a feat of this type is beyond the norm and sets itself apart from any other competition.

Since the beginning of my editorship in the Gem State (2020), Team Idaho has performed exceptionally well. In fact, prior to the COVID shutdown in 2020 (Fargo not held), the ten year average for All-Americans (all divisions) was approximately 13. Then, following COVID, Team Idaho produced a state record 24 All-Americans in 2021 and followed in 2022 with 21. Despite dipping slightly in 2023 with 19 All-Americans, the Gem State brought home the state’s first national team title in the Junior Greco-Roman division with a state record 10 All-Americans.

Entering this year’s championships with another large contingent, the Gem State wrestlers hit the Fargo mats running, fiercly battling against the nation’s best, and in the end brought home a total of 15 All-Americans, which to date matches the new 10 year average for all divisions. Another notable achievement is for the eleventh time since 2001, Idaho’s Junior Greco division placed in the top 10 in the state team standings, finishing 6th this year with 7 All-Americans.

Leading this year’s Idaho contingent is Mountain View’s graduate Shilo Jones and incoming sophomore Ivan Ivanov of Eagle. No stranger to Fargo and the national scene, Jones capped his prep career with his long sought after Fargo National Championship title. To sum it up, Jones’ list of accolades is very long, impressive, and among the top tier in Idaho history. For the past several years, he has traveled the country from coast to coast seeking the toughest competition possible in his respective weight group and as a result has earned 15 All-American honors among many other accolades at a series of national level tournaments.

Despite coming up short of earning an All-American honor in the Junior Freestyle division (lost by a slim margin in the consolation blood round), Jones refocused and moved forward with a counter strike that left no doubt that he is the king of the hill in the Junior Greco-Roman division. For instance, in Jones’ first six matches leading up to the championship finals, he scored a combined 54 points to only 4 being scored by his opponent in the round of 16. In the end, Jones battled hard in the finals against South Dakota’s Micah Hach,  and like a true champion achieved his most sought after prize, A Fargo National Championship. As a result, Jones is a new member of Idaho’s 4x All-American Club and part of a small group of national Fargo Champions. Headed to North Dakota State University this Fall, Jones is definitely a student of the sport and will go down in history as one of most dedicated wrestlers in Gem State history.

A member of the Suples Wrestling Club since birth, Ivanov is the son of Suples Founder and Head Coach, Ivan Ivanov, a world class wrestler from Bulgaria and among the top Greco coaches in the world today. Having had success at the age group levels for the past several years, Ivanov recently made a name for himself on the national stage this past May by winning the U15 Greco title at the US Open in Las Vegas. At this year’s Fargo training camp, I had the opportunity to talk to Ivan about his goals for Fargo. Without hesitation, Ivanov stated, “My goal  is  to win it all…I plan to be on the top step of the podium.”

Beyond any doubt, Ivanov has proven on the mat that he is among the top young wrestlers in the national Greco pipeline. I have witnessed firsthand his training regimen at Suples, a wrestling system that is among the best in the world and has produced many national and world level medalists. From match one through the championship finals, Ivanov outscored his opponents by a score of 72-8 and on the big stage, he defeated number two seed Eli Esquerra of Ohio with a first period fall. As a result, Ivanov was presented the Outstanding Wrestler award in the 16U Greco-Roman division. To date, Ivanov is the sixth Idaho wrestler in history to receive this great honor.

Joining Jones on the All-American podium for Junior Greco is veteran Hudson Rogers of Meridian. Committed to compete for Utah Valley University, Rogers is a student of the sport and has embraced the demanding “Process” it takes to reach the pinnacle of our great sport. His capacity to commit to countless hours of training, preparation, and compete against the top tier in the country is evident with the results he has produced since he first set foot on the mat at a very young age. In due course, Rogers’ hard work and commitment to the pursuit of excellence has paid off in dividends as he joins Jones’ in Idaho’s rare 4x Fargo All-American Club.

Ridgevue graduate and West Liberty University commit Treygen Morin put together one of his best Fargo experiences to date by reaching the championship finals after registering five solid victories enroute (outscored his opponents 46-8), including a win over the number one seed Manuel Saldate of Nevada in the semi-finals. Placing runner-up, Morin is a longtime member of Suples WC and is the 19th wrestler in history to join Idaho’s 3x Fargo All-American Club.

A returning Junior Greco All-American and the anchor to last year’s National Championship team, University of Sioux Falls commit Jaxton Packer (South Fremont H.S.) battled back hard after losing in the round of 16 to reach the consolation final. In his final match, Packer registered a fall in the first round over Logan Schwanz of Minnesota and joins Morin in Idaho’s 3x Fargo All-America Club.

The next two Junior All-Americans return next season in pursuit of a rare fourth prep state title in their respective state divisions as well as becoming Idaho’s newest members of the 2x Fargo All-American Club. They include Bishop Kelly’s Matthew Martino and Boden Banta of South Fremont High School. Competing in one of the largest weight groups in the Junior Freestyle division with approximately 150 competitors, Martino battled hard for two days, posting an 8-2 record and a well-deserved All-American honor. Earning his first Fargo All-American honor in the 16U Greco division back in 2022, Banta battled hard throughout and, in the end, capped off his junior season with a hard fought All-American honor.

In the Junior Women’s Freestyle division, returning All-American Joely Slyter and 2023 National Champion Kaidance Gerg were the lone All-Americans in 2024. A 2023 Idaho State Champion and 3x state placer, Slyter posted a 5-2 record to secure her third national medal and is the fourth to join Idaho’s 3x Fargo All-American Club. Rated among the top junior level wrestlers in the women’s division, Gerg won six straight matches before dropping a highly contested match in the semi-finals. Like a true champion, Gerg regrouped and won her next two matches in championship format in addition to securing her second Fargo medal and becoming the sixth to join Idaho’s Fargo 2x All-American Club.

In the women’s 16U Freestyle division, two more All-American honors were earned by freshman state champions Olivia Bezdicek of Jerome and Buhl’s Roxy Sheen. Based on their recent performances at the state championships and national competitions, both Bezdicek and Sheen are an example of the top up and coming talent being produced in the Gem State and from what I have observed at the grassroots level, the talent is growing at a significant rate.

Other Idaho wrestlers earning their first Fargo All-American honor include Canyon Ridge’s Sean Hall (16U GR), Malad’s Drake Morrison (16U GR), American Fall’s Blaise Turner (16U GR), and Southern Oregon commit Carson Gooley of Meridian in the Junior Greco division.

Recently, I had the opportunity to discuss the current status of Idaho wrestling and Fargo with Chris Owens, the Director of Wrestling Operations for Idaho USA Wrestling. He stated, “Team Idaho battled hard throughout the Fargo competition and showed the effort that people have come to expect from our Idaho teams. The wrestlers were well prepared, competed at a high level…We couldn’t be prouder of their efforts! Thanks to the many coaches and parents that made big contributions to the team’s success this year. We are so thankful for our Idaho wrestling community!”

Another notable highlight worth mentioning is the sum of All-American honors earned by the Gem State for the last four decades. To date, the Gem State has produced a total of 346 All-Americans since Zane Jones became the first in 1980.

In summary, the state of Idaho continues to make a big statement on the national scene. Case in point, for the last several years Idaho has produced a solid number of All-Americans annually at Fargo, Folkstyle Nationals, and other national level events. From my first experience observing the wrestling scene in Idaho nearly four years ago, I could feel it in the air that something special was happening here. The wrestling culture in the Gem State is growing and from my observation is solidifying into a system that any wrestler willing to embrace the “Process” is more than capable of reaching their full potential at the highest of levels. I want to give a “thumbs up” to Chris Owens, all the coaches and volunteers involved with Team Idaho, as well as a job well done for each and every Idaho wrestler that competed at the Fargo Nationals. On another note, I want to give a shoutout to past multiple Fargo National Champion and All-American Aden Attao (Borah H.S. grad/Suples WC) for winning his second Pan American Gold medal. Job well done!

Below is a list of 2024 All-Americans per division and Fargo statistics dating back to 1980. A huge “THANK YOU” to Jason Bryant, one of the top journalists and promoters of wrestling in the country for his hard work and commitment to compile the entire history of the Fargo National Championships. Accordingly, I would not have been able to accurately compile Idaho’s history without having access to his work. We’re One Idaho!
