The 2023 team title in the 2A/1A was highly contested throughout with New Plymouth finishing on top over Ririe, who in 2022 just edged the Pilgrims in the final match of the state finals at heavyweight. This season, New Plymouth is the early favorite, but will be challenged by several schools.

The Pilgrims return a strong group this season with seven state placers, which includes three state champions in Jacob Shaw (Jr.), Skyler Rodriguez (Sr.) and Nathan Willoughby (Sr.) in addition to eight state qualifiers. Other returning state placers include Jeremiah Perry (Jr.), Gabriel Cox (Jr.), James Ethington (Sr.), and Brock Cooper (Jr.).

Also in contention for a top three finish is Kellogg, which is located in the northern panhandle. The Wildcats return one state champion, four additional placers, and ten qualifiers. The leader here is returning state champion Jaeger Hall (Sr.), followed by fellow placers Chase Scribner (Soph.), Ricky Haralson (Jr.), Kolby Lemmon (Sr.), and Kolter Wood (Sr.), who is vying for a fourth state medal.

North Fremont also returns a strong contingent with six state placers and nine qualifiers overall. They include state placers Carson Hill (Jr.), Bronc Cordingly (Jr.), Cutter Bowman (Sr.), Orin Miller (Jr.), and 2022 placers Justin Patino (Jr.) and Teysen Gunnell (Sr.). Other teams that will challenge for top sport include Malad, Ririe, Soda Springs, and West Side.

Top-level wrestlers to keep an eye out on include 2x state champions Gabe Mullenburg of Glenns Ferry (Jr.) and All-American Tucker Bowen (Soda Springs, Sr.). Other returning state champions include Carter Kimball (Grace, Soph.), Wallace Durfee (Declo, Sr.), Colton Gundersen (West Side, Sr.), and 3x placer Wyatt Cutler of Grace (Sr.) in addition to 3x placer Hiatt Beck of Aberdeen (Sr.), who will challenge for the title this season. Additionally, Isaac Finley (Wendel., Sr.), Price Thomas (Glenns Ferry, Sr.), and Ches Lee Webb (Ririe, Jr.) all have finals experience and will challenge for the top of the podium in February.

Below is listed top returning teams, state champions, multi-placers, and All-Americans. Once again, the 2023-’24 season is expected to be exciting this year, especially in the 2A/1A team race.

NOTE: All wrestlers in this preview are listed at previous weight groups and is subject to change in 2023-’24. Additionally, all my data is driven from past state championship results and input from coaches throughout the state, which I was able to obtain.
