This year marks the 30th anniversary that the USMC 16U/Junior Nationals (aka, Fargo Nationals) have been conducted under the roof of the Fargo Dome on the campus of North Dakota State University. It also marks the first time that the Gem State has won a title at these championships.

Since the first competition in 1971 (Junior division only), the tournament size has exponentially grown, especially since the addition of the girl’s divisions in the early 2000s. With a record 7,134 entries competing in 2023, the level of competition is very competitive in all respective divisions. To sum it up, Fargo is among the largest age group tournaments in the world and a sneak preview of future NCAA Champions, All-Americans and Olympians.

A question that I frequently encounter from people within my wrestling circle is what high school level tournament is the toughest in the land? My answer without hesitation is the Fargo Nationals. Yes, there are top tier prep tournaments, such as the Walsh Ironman, Clovis “Doc” Buchanan, Super 32, and the Beast of the East to name a few. It would be like comparing apples to oranges because each of these prep competition attracts the cream of the crop of the nation as does Fargo. Having said that, there is nothing like Fargo. For starters, it’s the largest age group tournament in the world that has 30 full size mats spanning the floor of the Fargo Dome. Secondly, Fargo is a week-long grind made up of several divisions (i.e., Junior and Cadet for Freestyle, Greco, and Women’s), where some weight groups within these divisions have well over a hundred competitors. Furthermore, for those wrestlers competing in both freestyle and Greco, it is not uncommon to wrestle anywhere from 12 to 16 matches in a span of four days. The mental and physical fortitude it requires one to attempt a feat of this type is beyond the norm.

Since the pause in 2020 (COVID), Team Idaho has performed exceptionally well moving forward. In fact, prior to COVID, the ten year average for All-Americans (all divisions) was approximately 13. Then, following COVID, Team Idaho produced a state record 24 All-Americans in 2021 and followed in 2022 with 21. Dipping slightly this year, the Gem State still had an outstanding overall performance, bringing home 19 All-Americans, four individual champions, and a National Championships in Junior Greco-Roman, a first in Idaho history.

Leading the Idaho contingent is Blackfoot’s Mack Mauger. No stranger to Fargo, Mauger made state history once again when he won his fifth Fargo title, breaking the previous record of four, which he shared with Hayden Tuma. What’s more, Mauger also became the fourth Idaho wrestler to earn a sixth Fargo All-American honor. Joining Mauger is Oregon State commit Aden Attao, rated among the top prep heavyweights heading to the college ranks this coming season. Only a week prior to Fargo, Attao was in Santiago, Chile winning his second U20 Pan American Gold and without much of a break, he took the Fargo Dome by storm and reached the championship finals in both freestyle and Greco. Losing a heartbreaker in the freestyle final, he quickly recovered and wasted no time in Greco by outscoring his competition 53-3 to win his third Fargo title. Furthermore, Attao ends his Fargo career as the fourth Idaho wrestler to earn 3 Fargo titles and sixth to earn a total of 5 All-American honors. Additionally, he is one of three from Idaho to make 5 championship finals appearances (State record – Ridge Lovett, 7 finals appearances from 2015-’19).

Also winning Gold in Santiago, Chile is multiple All-American and U15 World Greco-Roman Champion Jadon Skellenger of Bishop Kelly. A finalist in 2022, Skellenger fell short to reach the All-American rounds in freestyle, but came back strong in Greco to win five straight matches, only to face U17 World Champion Joel Adams of Nebraska in the championship finals. The action between the two world class athletes was plentiful throughout the mat with Skellenger scoring a point in the first period due to Adams’ passivity and another with a push out. Battling hard for a majority of the second period, the tide quickly turned against Skellenger in the waning seconds of the match when Adams executed a quick duck under and immediately launched him for a four point throw at the edge of mat for the victory.

A returning 16U Fargo All-American in Greco, Bonneville’s Saxton Scott left no doubt that he is among the top young Greco talent in the country. Competing in the 106 pound weight division, Scott dominated his competition throughout the tournament winning six matches in a row with a combined score of 55 points to his opponents 1 to reach the championship finals. In the finals, he sealed the deal with a dominating performance, scoring a technical fall in the first round. On top of that, he was awarded the “Outstanding Wrestler” Award for his exceptional performance.

Recently moving to Idaho from the state of Washington, Kaidance Gerg of Meridian definitely made a name for herself at this year’s championships. Falling short of placing at the last two 16U Fargo Nationals, Gerg clearly was the top wrestler at her weight group. In the championship final, she clearly had the upper hand against her opponent and won by technical fall. With this title, Gerg becomes the second Idaho wrestler to earn a Junior Women’s freestyle title, the first being Anneliese DeAragon in 2009.

To earn a single All-American honor in either styles is a task in itself, but to achieve this honor in both styles during the same championships is an exceptional achievement. Joining Mauger and Attao as double All-Americans are prep standouts Gabriel Rosales of Mountain Home and Shilo Jones (Mountain View). Determined for some time to add an All-American accolade to his already impressive wrestling resume, Rosales met the challenge this year by not only earning one, but two All-American honors in the 100 pound weight division. A veteran of Fargo, Jones established himself to be among the top returning prep heavyweights in the country by earning All-American honors in freestyle and Greco, a finals appearance in Greco, and third Fargo medal to date.

The remaining All-Americans include Rigby’s Hunter Anderson, Carlos Valdez (Bishop Kelly), Corban University commit Isaiah Twait (Meridian), Amie Hartman (Mountain Home), and Clare Waite of Boise. Furthermore, three more Fargo veterans added a second All-American honor to their credit. They include Nebraska commit Tanner Frothinger of Eagle, Jaxton Packer (South Fremont), and Treygen Morin of Ridgevue.

Prior to the 2023 Fargo Nationals, the Gem State placed in the top ten several times, the first being in the Junior freestyle division in 2000. From that point forward, the Junior freestyle placed in the top 10 three more times including a 4th place finish in 2022. In the Junior Greco division, Idaho has experienced greater success of the two styles. To date, Idaho has produced ten top 10 finishes (first in 2001) with three being in the top 5, which includes this year’s title. As of late, the 16U Greco division has achieved three top 10 finishes (first in 2013) with 2021 being the highest at 4th place.

As of this writing, I am still trying to comprehend the significance of Idaho winning its first Fargo National title. The leading indicators that led to this great achievement have been present for some time. For instance, from 2010 to 2019, the state of Idaho averaged a total of thirteen Fargo All-Americans (all divisions), but since COVID has increased its numbers on an upward trajectory, producing a record 24 in 2021, 21 last season, and slightly dipping to 19 in 2023. Additionally, Team Idaho has had a very strong presence at the USAW Folkstyle Nationals, winning the overall team title twice in the last couple of years in addition to placing in the top five a few times at Fargo. Moreover, at the international level, a cadre of Idaho prep stars have made their mark against world competition. They include Derek Matthews, Jadon Skellenger, and Aden Attao.

Unquestionably, this achievement did not happen by circumstance, it has been an “All Hands on Deck” effort to grow wrestling and build a culture that competes with the elite states across the country. There are many outstanding coaches and volunteers that are part of this process led by Chris Owens, the Director of Idaho USA Wrestling. Together, they have executed a blue print for action to implement this vision set years prior. Not only did Team Idaho win their first Fargo national title, they achieved this great feat by producing a state record 10 All-Americans and in the process broke Illinois’ 14 year win streak. The motivational impact this will have on Idaho is enormous, especially being the lowest populated state in the country to ever win a Fargo title (Idaho pop. 1.9 million). Prior to, Iowa (pop. 3.2 million) was the lowest populated state to achieve this feat in the men’s divisions (Note – Hawaii won 2011 Fargo Junior Women’s Nationals – pop. 1.4 million). The younger generations coming up the line now know that it is possible to achieve at the highest levels. Post tournament, Team Idaho leader Chris Owens stated, “Great day for Idaho wrestling…Today we broke Illinois’ 14 year streak of Junior Greco titles – Not Iowa, not Pennsylvania, not Ohio, but Idaho. Congratulations to all wrestlers, coaches, and support staff on making this dream a reality.”

All in all, this is a great time in Idaho wrestling history. As I writer, promoter, and coach, I am fortunate to be part of the Idaho wrestling culture and look forward to the future years to come. A big thumbs up to Chris Owens, the coaching staff, volunteers, and wrestlers that were an integral part of this great performance in Fargo. Below is a comprehensive list of 2023 All-Americans, team and individual highlights, and historical statistics for Team Idaho dating back to 1980. We’re One Idaho!
