There is the old saying within wrestling circles across the country, “Summer wrestling makes winter champions.” Since the conclusion of the 2023 Idaho State Championships, wrestlers from all corners of the Gem State have continued to train and compete at Freestyle and Greco-Roman style tournaments throughout Idaho and the country to prepare for the 16U/Junior Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota, as well as the upcoming prep season in 2024

During the month of June, Team Idaho sent a strong contingent of wrestlers to Tulsa, Oklahoma to compete in the National Junior Dual Championships and then to Farmington, Utah for the Turf Wars. These duals consisted of Freestyle and Greco-Roman styles in both the boy’s and girl’s divisions. Overall, Team Idaho represented well at both competitions with the Junior boy’s Greco-Roman team making a huge statement to the rest of the country at the national duals. In the pool B competition, Team Idaho compiled a 4-0 record defeating Utah, Kansas, Missouri, and Pennsylvania to advance to the Gold/Silver bracket (consists of the top teams from each of the four pools). In the Gold/Silver bracket, Team Idaho defeated Oklahoma, Colorado, but then lost close duals to California and Iowa, respectively to finish fourth in the nation. Unquestionably, Team Idaho made a huge statement to the rest of the country.

Individually, Bishop Kelly’s Jadon Skellenger and Mack Mauger of Blackfoot dominated their competition in Greco-Roman. Skellenger, a U15 World Champion and multiple time All-American went undefeated with an 8-0 record (scored 69 points to his opponents 1), while Mauger, a 4x Fargo National Champion earned technical falls in seven matches (scored 61 points), not giving up a single point in the competition.

Following the duals in Oklahoma, Team Idaho sent a contingent to Farmington, Utah to compete at the Turf Wars against teams from the greater western United States. Altogether, Idaho represented well with the boys winning the Open Freestyle division championship, defeating a team from Temecula Vally, California, Oregon, Utah, and Nevada. For more detail, see all dual meet scores at both the Junior National Duals and Turf Wars below.

This week, Team Idaho will be conducting a training camp in preparation for the 2023 US Marine Corps Junior & 16U National Championships in Fargo, North Dakota. For the last two years, Team Idaho has performed very well at these championships, producing a state record 24 All-Americans in 2021 and 21 All-Americans last year. In 2023, Team Idaho is expected to send a strong contingent of returning All-Americans and several up and coming talent. These championships are being held from July 14th – 22nd.
