Madison vs. Rigby
7:30 p.m. Wednesday
Riding high off a four-game win-streak, the Madison Bobcats have found their rhythm on offense. Travis Schwab’s squad has just two losses on the season and scored a season-high 81 points against Bonneville last week. Taden King led the Bobcats with 21 points and will look to hit the court running against the state’s fifth-ranked 5A team.
The Trojans, meanwhile, found their stride a while back, but the backcourt has allowed 50 or more points in five of the team’s last six games. Nevertheless, Justin Jones has led a scoring effort that ranks second in the entire 5A classification.
The Bobcats sit one spot above the Trojans in 5A District 5-6, with Madison yet to lose a conference matchup. Both teams will hope to overtake conference leader Thunder Ridge, who is currently 2-0 in the 5-6.
Preston vs. Hillcrest
7:30 p.m. Wednesday
The Indians have rebounded nicely from a three-game skid to close out 2020, stringing together a trio of wins over in-state and out-of-state opponents. Preston dropped a pair of games to Treasure Valley foes Vallivue and Middleton after the holidays, but still managed 50-point-plus performances in each.
Coming off the break, the Indians dropped 77 on Logan (UT) and 72 on Blackfoot, before taking their foot off the break by defeating Twin Falls 64-56. But third-ranked Hillcrest will be Preston’s highest-ranked opponent since the loss to Middleton, as the Indians look to boost their regular-season record before conference competition opens up next week.
The Knights, undefeated in the 4A High Country Conference and 8-3 overall, find themselves sandwiched squarely in the middle of the 4A South East Idaho Conference in last week’s coaches’ poll. At No. 3, Hillcrest sits just below No. 3 Century and above No. 4 Preston and No. 5 Pocatello.
The Knights haven’t lost since Dec. 28, a three-point heartbreaker at the hands of 5A Lake City, and have yet to lose to a team in their classification.
Marsh Valley vs. South Fremont
7:30 p.m. Thursday
Just six days separate South Fremont from its latest loss to the Marsh Valley Eagles. Heading into this week, the Eagles hope to reverse the three-point loss that snapped a three-game winning streak.
In that game, Stanton Howell, Karter Howell and Condy Hansen teamed up for 37 of the team’s 56 total points. The win capped off a six-win run, which was eventually snapped by the Soda Springs Cardinals in a surprising 64-52 upset.
Lapwai vs. St. Maries
7 p.m. Monday
Up north, the Wildcats will punch above their classification against a team undefeated seven games into its 2020-2021 campaign.
Two completely different play styles will be on display at St. Maries high school, with Lapwai fielding 1ADI’s most lethal offense, averaging 77 points per game. The Lumberjacks, conversely, house a defense allowing an average of 35 points per game, the best mark at the 2A level by about six points.
The key to stopping the Wildcats centers around star Titus Yearout, who is currently closing in on the state’s all-time scoring record. Yearout is averaging just under 30 points per game this season, helping the Wildcats drop 90-plus twice already. But the Lumberjacks could be Yearout’s toughest test yet. St. Maries has help opponents to below 30 three times this year.
Dietrich vs. Garden Valley
7:30 p.m. Friday
Watch Live
Only a few times a year do the state’s top two ranked teams face off in the regular season.
Friday’s 1ADII matchup will bring plenty of fireworks, with a pair of seven-win teams on a collision course. Dietrich and Garden Valley both hold the title of highest scoring offenses in their prospective conferences, with the Wolverines holding the slight advantage with 69 ppg.
The Wolverines field a pair of blue chips in Covy Kelly and Josh Gillespie. Both are averaging more than 20 points per game this season, with Gillespie owning the battle of the boards, averaging eight rebounds.
