Vallivue’s new head coach seems to be exactly what the Falcons need.
Last year, Vallivue has one of the worst defenses in 4A, giving up 40 points per game. The quick fix? Go hire a former NFL linebacker.
“We need to improve everything on defense,” new head coach Shea McClellin said. “We gave up way too many points. We need to be fundamentally sound to give us a shot to win games. Our effort and physicality has to be drastically better.”
McClellin was a standout linebacker for Boise State and went on to play in the NFL for the Chicago Bears and New England Patriots. After his professional career ended, he decided to come home, leading Marsing to a state playoff appearance for the first time in nearly a decade.
But while McClellin bring the defensive expertise, he says his offense may steal the show. The air-raid look led by quarterback senior Isaac Moore is loaded with skilled players across the board. Returning wide receiver Austin Belnap and Briggs Marler will see the bulk of the targets while Ryker Oswald and Onix Carson will split time in the backfield. The key to it all, McClellin says, is the quarterback.
“Like any QB, Isaac need to be on his A-game at all times,” he said. “We have a plethora of skill guys that can make big plays we just need to get them the ball as much as possible. Well roll with hot hand each game.”
Vallivue opens its season by hosting Twin Falls before traveling to 6A Borah in Week 2. Another early-season test waits for them in Week 3 as the Falcons travel to Skyview, a school that made the state playoffs a year ago. McClellin says his team is ready for the challenges that lay ahead.
“I’m excited to unleash them on Friday nights,” McClellin said.
“We have the potential to be very explosive.”
