Team Preview
Written by: Dallin Fryar Going into the 2023 season, the expectations for the Twin Falls Bruins were as high as they have been in the last several years. Not only did the Bruins live up to the expectations, they did so in dominating fashion in the Great Basin Conference outscoring GBC opponents 243-85 in their matchups while going 5-0. However, after a disappointing second round exit in the state playoffs to Skyline, the Bruins are hungry for a big 2024 season. Despite losing 2x All-State RB Wyatt Solosabal, the Bruins will still be a physical run first offense. Coach Ben Kohring, returning for his fifth season at the helm, says the offense will “pride itself on ball control and red zone efficiency.” Coach Kohring will turn ball carrying duties over to Amos Kun and Sam Martin to shoulder the load of the carries for the Bruins stalwart running attack. The X-Factor to this team’s success very well may be the offensive line. Due to the run first mentality of the Bruins’ offense, the O-Line will pave the way to success for this program, led by junior OL Marcus Arias. On the defensive side of the ball, the Bruins will look to build on what their focus was in 2023: aggressively creating turnovers. Senior Vince Gonzalez, an absolute force at the linebacker position, will anchor the Bruins defense, with DL Jackson Martin and Easton Irwin causing havoc upfront. The Bruins will begin their season with a tough non-conference schedule. Apart from their opening week outing against Vallivue, the other three non-conference opponents for the Bruins won their conferences in Sandpoint, Pocatello, and Hillcrest. Coach Kohring shared that he is excited for his team to be “battle tested” throughout their non-conference campaign in preparation for conference play. Despite the move to 5A, all the members of the GBC remain the same in 2024.
