After reaching the quarterfinals of the 3A state playoffs in 2022, hopes were high for South Fremont's 2023 season.
Injuries struck early, however, as the Cougars lost two quarterbacks in the first two weeks of their season. South Fremont went on to finish 1-8 overall to conclude their final season in 3A before moving to 4A this year for the first time in school history.
"If we can stay healthy and get our guys to grow into their new positions and roles, we can surprise some teams this year," longtime head coach Chad Hill said.
South Fremont graduated Skyler Forbush (First Team All Mountain Rivers Conference WR), Neilson Glascock (Second Team All Mountain Rivers Conference OL), Max Clark (First Team All Mountain Rivers Conference OL/LB) and Hadley Hill (Second Team All Mountain Rivers Conference RB) from its 2023 varsity roster. Hill described the 2024 Cougars as a spread offense team that will utilize returning quarterback Bryce Johnson and junior running back/linebacker Conner Eddins.
Consistency will be critical on the offensive side of the ball, he added.
"We have got to be more consistent running the football and finish drives when we get our opportunities," Hill said.
Defensively, Hill said the Cougars are extremely athletic. Creating more turnovers will be a point of emphasis this season.
"We have a lot of 175 to 195 pound players that move really well and are physical," Hill said. "I think we will match up to all types of offenses that we see in 4A. We will be physical enough to stop the run and athletic enough to match up with teams that like to spread it out."
Additionally, Hill described his players as unselfish, and he has seen them live this out.
"We have guys that are team-first players and willing to do whatever is asked of them," Hill said. "Whether that is moving to a new position or sacrificing touches to get the ball to the open guy, we have a lot of very unselfish players."
South Fremont begins its season Aug. 23 by hosting Bear Lake.
The Cougars will begin conference play Oct. 11 by hosting Sugar-Salem.
