Team Preview
Written by: Lucas Gebhart As head coach Jason Burton enters his second season at Owyhee, the goals are clear. The Storm believe, and now expect, to be one of Idaho’s premiere high school football programs. Owyhee is entering its fourth season, and while other sports saw instant success, the football program stumbled out of the gate, winning just one game back in 2021. But the Storm is building. Owyhee won five games the following year and eight last fall, making Burton believe that Owyhee is ready for the next step – the one that will take them into the upper tier of the 6A SIC. “We are committed to building the Owyhee football brand as a physically dominant team known for explosive plays,” Burton said. “Our goal is to become one of the top four teams in the SIC and the state. This season, we are a smarter team thanks to the hard work put in during the offseason and a stronger team due to our dedication in the weight room.” Despite losing 10 players who started for at least two seasons, Owyhee’s roster holds some of the best talent in the state, returning five players with all-conference honors, including three-time All-SIC linebacker Gage Haws. “He’s our leader on defense,” Burton said. “He can run sideline to sideline and plays with great physicality.” On offense, the Storm return one of Idaho’s top recruits in the 2025 class in junior Ryan Brekke. The physical pass catcher holds an offer from the University of Idaho and more should be on the way. Brekke, along with wide receiver Aiden Joye and running back Cade Walker help make up what could be one of Idaho’s most explosive offenses. “The run game is something that we want to improve,” Burton said. “We have a solid offensive line and one of the most explosive running backs in the SIC, if not the state. Our wide receiving core is top notch so defenses will have to pick what they want to stop.” Owyhee opens the season at Centennial and will face its first test of the year Sept. 13 when they host Meridian. Their last three will help determine whether or not Owyhee football has emerged as Idaho’s newest powerhouse, closing the year with Eagle, Boise and Mountain View.
