A season ago, New Plymouth started fast, compiling a 3-1 record by scoring an average of 38.5 points per game.
That marked the high point, though, as the Pilgrims went 0-5 the rest of the way, including finishing 0-4 in a very competitive Western Idaho Conference.
So this offseason, second-year head coach Tony Cade had his players hit the books. His players responded with fervor, devouring the playbook at a breakneck pace. It’s led to unbridled enthusiasm, especially on the offensive side of the ball.
“We are poised to showcase our offensive prowess, driven by speed, experience and teamwork,” says coach Cade. “We’re known for our versatile style of play, which allows us to adapt to various game situations and keep our opponents on their toes. With our combination of speed and improved knowledge of the game, we’re ready to tackle any challenge that comes our way.”
Senior running back Payton Travis nearly rushed for 1,000 yards a season ago, and will be an important part of New Plymouth’s offense again in 2024. Junior Cam Mowder takes the reins at quarterback for the first time, and will look to returning receivers Troy Swain and Kaden Hawker.
A third receiver, Derrick Walker, transferred to Middleton, but he’ll ironically be replaced by Cutler King, a transfer from Parma.
With so many toys in the offensive toy box this year, seniors Payton Zigga and Tuckyr Christopher are expected to lead a relatively untested offensive line.
“We are seeking to enhance our blocking up front, a goal shared by football teams across America,” quips Cade.
On the other side of the ball, new defensive coordinator Ben Renteria will have to figure out a way to replace defensive end Heath Jarboe, who led the entire 2A classification in sacks with 11.5.
“We are focusing on improving our defensive alignments, assignments and aggressiveness,” says Cade. “We are emphasizing flying to the ball.”
Marcus Garcia and Christopher return to anchor the defensive line, and newcomer Cyrus Gibbons has potential up front. Zigga and Travis will lead the linebackers, and Anthony Casale and freshman Braxton Mowder will be featured there, as well. Hawker, Swain, King and Jerry Perry will comprise the secondary.
Cade adds, “With great skill players at the defensive back and linebacker positions, we’re confident in our ability to rise to the challenge.”
Overall, there is definitely potential bubbling at New Plymouth this year. After finishing winless in a league that features tough opponents night in and night out, there’s only one way to go for the ‘Grims.
“The year’s team will be exciting to watch. Their competitiveness and energy on the field each week will be a highlight,” says Cade. “The hard work put in during the summer and offseason is expected to show results. Additionally, the community’s growing support and football culture is a positive factor for this year’s squad, making the upcoming season something to look forward to.”
