Team Preview
Written by: Lucas Gebhart At the conclusion of last season, there were a lot of unknowns at Nampa High and the answers to those questions would take months to find. When the new classification format was rolled out last fall, Nampa fell into the 6A class, but the plan was to petition down to remain in 5A, which meant rejoining many of their old 4A foes. When their initial petition was denied by the IHSAA Board last September, school administrators kept pushing, and when the final classification realignments were released, Nampa found themselves in the 5A class, and the 2024 football schedule got much easier. “I’m excited about the players returning with 6A varsity experience who bring energy, leadership, and have fun playing football,” new head coach Ty Thomas said. “I’m excited about our big play potential.” Two years ago, Nampa took the Idaho high school football world by storm. In its first of two seasons in Idaho’s highest class, Nampa finished the regular season with a 7-2 record and found themselves in the 5A state playoffs, a surprise to many. But last year was a much different story. The Bulldogs finished last season 0-9, were blown out by nearly every 5A school on their schedule and found themselves looking for another head football coach, their second search in two seasons. But the Bulldogs feel they can be competitive in the 5A class. They have a veteran team, led by senior quarterback Dom Almaraz, and Thomas says the spread attack will distribute the ball to many of the Bulldog’s playmakers. The list includes senior receivers Kartez Hernandez and Antonio Sandoval. Running back Ryker Good and junior back Omar Vasser should also see plenty of action this fall. “We have to have the ability to adapt to challenges and successes experienced throughout the season,” Thomas said. “It starts with effective leadership from returning players and coaches.” The key, Thomas says, will be adapting to the bumps and challenges that the season always seems to bring. “We have to have effective leadership from returning players and coaches,” he said. “We need to consistently execute fundamentals and responsibilities.”
