Team Preview
Written by: Dallin Fryar

If there is one team in the Great Basin Conference that one can always expect to see towards the top of the standing it is the Minico Spartans. Under the leadership of second-year Head Coach Sherm Blaser, the Spartans do not expect that to change in the 2024 season.

The Spartans are returning several key players, such as Nate Wayment (DB), Preston Sonner-Cranney (RB), and a tough offensive line with Mathyis Gomez, Julio Juarez, and Alex Lineras.

Blaser referred to his offensive line as “big, physical, and mean.” They will look to set the tone each and every snap for the Spartans.

However, having to replace several key players such as QB Carson Wayment and WR Ryker Stimpson will not be an easy task. Blaser is optimistic that new talents like Boady Baker (LB) and Ethan Heward (WR) will step up and make an impact.

Last season saw a big change in the Spartans offense, much different than what GBC members and the rest of Idaho have become accustomed to seeing.

No longer were there 2-3 running backs in the backfield. Blaser brought a spread offense to the Spartans, and it had a definitive impact. They averaged over 42 ppg in the 2024 season.

Minico's spread style is anchored by their stalwart O-Line, with a focus on reloading the QB and WR positions this season.

Defensively, the team is known for its speed and athleticism, aiming to create more takeaways this season. Coach Blaser is most excited about the team's strong chemistry and the players' dedication to the game. The 'X-Factor' this season will be the fundamentals—mastering the basics like blocking, tackling, and ball security.

In the conference, one can expect to see Minico and Twin Falls battling it out for the top spot in the GBC, just as in previous seasons. However, teams like Canyon Ridge could surprise some with their growth under Coach Juan Alvarado's leadership. The season promises to be a competitive one, with Minico poised to make a strong showing.
