Team Preview
Written by: Lucas Gebhart After joining the 5A class a few years ago, Middleton’s football program quickly learned they could play with Idaho’s big boys. But when Idaho’s newest classification format, and rule changes, were rolled out, Middleton’s enrollment kept the Vikings in the 5A class, which is now the second largest statewide. In the new era of Idaho High School sports, there not only is a new 6A classification, but now schools can petition up or down for each individual sport instead of being required to submit one petition for every sport offered at the school. It’s a change Middleton is taking full advantage of and school administrators wasted little time asking the IHSAA Board to keep the Vikings in Idaho’s 6A football class. In their mind, the program has earned it. Since moving up, Middleton has enjoyed two 7-win seasons and qualified for the state playoffs both years. With future Division I athletes on the roster, losing talent to graduation isn’t much of an issue for Idaho’s top football programs and it doesn’t appear to be much of one at Middleton either. The Vikings lost a senior quarterback and their top two running back to graduation, but head coach Bill Brock doesn’t seem concerned. It might be because the Vikings have one of Idaho’s top-rated recruits sitting on their offensive line in Dallyn Grimes. The offensive tackle stands at 6-foot-5, 240-pounds and has already committed to his hometown school, Boise State, passing up offers from several Big Sky schools. Grimes’ primary job will be to protect Middleton’s new quarterback, junior Drew Holman, who should have plenty of targets to choose from with receivers Blake Bishop, Colton Severa and Kenson Maxwell back for another year. Middleton opens the new season Aug. 30 when they host Nampa before traveling to Madison in Week Two. The teeth of its 6A schedule hits in late September when Middleton plays state title front-runners Meridian and Rocky Mountain over a three week stretch.
