Coming off a nine-win season and an appearance in the 1A Division 1 (now 2A) state semifinals, the Logos Knights look to re-load to make another run in 2024. Head coach Nick Holloway, entering his fourth season as the school’s varsity football coach, returns a plethora of athleticism and speed this fall but must fill some key positions in order to make a run in November once again.

The most notable position is quarterback, where All-State performer Jack Driskill has moved on to Dakota Wesleyan after a banner high school career. Senior Seamus Wilson could see time at the position this fall, as could sophomore Baxter Covington. Whoever winds up taking snaps will have the benefit of a deep pool of skill-position players to get the ball to.

“We spread it out,” Holloway said of his team’s offense. “Will hit every area of the field. Lots of motion. Too many weapons at each position to focus on one guy.”

For starters, whichever player isn’t playing quarterback will slot in as a receiver or back (Covington averaged nearly 26 yards per catch last fall as a freshman). The team also returns second team All-State receiver Lucius Comis, who had 688 yards and 14 scores receiving, along with senior Ryan Daniels, who led the team with 36 receptions to go along with ten scoring catches of his own.

The Knights won’t be confused as a ground-based offense but 14 different players carried the ball in 2023. The top two individual ball carriers, Driskill and Harry Sundie, are both gone, but Comis (174 yards, 2 touchdowns), Covington (154 yards, 2 touchdowns), senior Ben Carlson (2 touchdowns), and junior Honour Mallory (2 touchdowns) return to an offense that actually scored 33 rushing touchdowns last season.

The defense will be led by Carlson, the team’s middle linebacker. He earned second team All-State recognition after posting nearly 100 tackles and three sacks for a Knight team that allowed less than 23 points per game in 2023. Daniels and fellow seniors Dominic Porras and Max Hawthorne will fill roles in the secondary while the defensive front line will feature players like Noah Atwood, George Evans, Buck Hixson, Bryce McMurray, and Gunnar Holloway, all seniors. The depth and experience give the Knights a definite advantage in the 8-man ranks.

“We do not have one individual player that is the fastest in the league,” Holloway said. “But we have a lot of guys that can really move.”

When it comes to the team’s upcoming schedule, the Knights are certainly challenging themselves on the field. Logos opens the season on August 23 in Middleton against Butte County, who won the state championship last season. The team that Butte County defeated in the title game, Oakley, comes to Moscow to face Logos on October 4. And Kendrick, which is moving up to the 2A classification after winning the last three 1A (formerly 1A Division 2) championships, will play in the Whitepine League. Logos will play at Kendrick on October 18. The Knights will also play league games on the road at Lapwai and Troy.

It makes up perhaps the toughest 8-man football schedule in Idaho. That alone will make it tough for Logos to repeat last year’s nine-win campaign. However, the challenges presented by the schedule could make Logos more dangerous in November. The depth, the skill, and the experience may make Logos one of the teams to beat in the 2A classification in 2024.
