Team Preview
Written by: Lucas Gebhart Hailing from the Dallas suburbs, Kuna’s new coach Beau Smith is embracing the Kuna lifestyle. The program is known for being blue-colored and the school oftentimes seems over looked and gets lost in the sea of suburban Boise football. But Smith is embracing it all, and it using the overlooked reputation as fuel for this program, which is looking to get back to the state playoffs. “Being the team that everyone is counting out will fuel the fire in these boys’ hearts,” Smith said. “There’s a savageness or primal passion that they play with that you don’t see in the youth of today. I believe that will set them apart from the rest of the pack.” Leading the pack is returning veteran running back Austin Lattimer. The power back bullied his way to over 1,000 rushing yards last season and will lead Kuna’s new power-run offense along with running back Cameron Hickman. On defense, Smith points to Jason Monroe, who seems to be a exemplify everything that Kuna is known for as this shutdown corner has quietly emerged as one of the best defensive backs in all of Idaho. “No QB ever threw his way,” Smith said. While the Kaveman plan to rely on the ground-and-pound style, they will look to a sophomore quarterback to run the offense. Lino Salas, a highly touted freshman in 2023, will start his 2024 campaign as Kuna’s starting varsity quarterback and like any young quarterback, his favorite target is likely to be a veteran tight end. In this case it’s senior Colten Detherage. “The kids are willing to put in the work and want to be pointed in the right direction for success,” Smith said. “This team has a strong ability to work together and with the right direction, could do something special.” Kuna opens its season with Rocky Mountain on Aug. 30.
