Team Preview
Written by: Lucas Gebhart Last year was supposed to be the year. Eagle entered the 5A playoffs with an 8-0 record and held the top spot in Idaho’s media poll most the season. They had a collection of DI talent, the best defense in the state, a powerful running game and two quarterbacks who ran two different styles of offense. After gutting out a 3-point quarterfinals win over the two-time defending state champions, Rigby, a state title seems inevitable. But the following week, the Eagle defense faced its toughest test of the year – win a game when the offense only scores six. They gave up seven and hopes for a state championship were dashed. “The game we lost last year the defense gave up 7 points,” said head coach James Cluphf. “Only two drives had a first down.” This fall, some of last year’s stars have moved on, but the Mustangs still return several of the state’s best players. Eagle loses defensive end Seth Brock to Montana State, tight end Cal Huish and offensive lineman Leon Evans to Idaho, and quarterback Davis Harsin to Idaho State, but return two all-state and nine all-conference players from a year ago. Headlining the list is running back Noah Burnham, who rushed for over 1,400 yards and 18 touchdowns in 2023 and quarterback Austin Ramsey, who comes into the fall ready to take over the offense full-time. “The offense will rely on a consistent run game with Burnham coming back alongside the dual threat ability of quarterback Austin Ramsey,” Cluphf said. The duo will have one of Idaho’s best offensive lines to run behind. Led by Sione Perkins, who holds offers from Montana, Weber State, Idaho, and Eastern Washington, the offensive line also returns Anthony Toomey and Nate Williams as starters and welcomes in Arizona transfer Kingston Critchfield. Gavin Crawford, Dallin Snooks, Zay Wright, Jake Benson, and Treyson Anderson are expected to provide “big-play” ability on the perimeter, Cluphf says. “There is elite speed on the perimeter this year, which will take pressure off Burnham,” he said. “I am excited to see the “young guys” from last year become consistent big time play makers.”
