Team Preview
Written by: Lucas Gebhart Centennial has won four games over the past three seasons and haven’t been to the state playoffs in over a decade. It’s a long drought that second-year head coach Keelan McCaffrey hopes to end soon. At his previous stop, McCaffrey led Minico High to several state playoff appearances in his seven seasons, but he also knows that rebuilding Centennial isn’t going to happen overnight. One thing he does know is that it all starts in the trenches. “It will start with our offensive line,” he said. Senior offensive linemen Isaac Di Santo and Roary Schwenson have something that McCaffrey can’t teach them – size – a good place to start. Di Santo stands 6-foot and weights in at 300-pounds while Schwenson measures comes in at 6-foot-3, 315 pounds. “They have been working hard all summer and I am excited to watch them impose their will,” McCaffrey said. “We have some skill guys that can make big plays, and we will lean on a committee of running backs that can help our offense make plays in the run game.” The beefed up offensive line, McCaffrey says, should help the Patriots throw the ball better and get on the edge quicker as well. “I hope it will help us not be one dimensional in what we are doing,” McCaffrey said. “We were a very powerful in the run game, but were never truly balanced and it cost us.” Defensively, Centennial is littered with seniors. Middle linebacker Tate Keddington, outside linebacker Abdi Ali and safety Parker Deboer are among them while Di Santo and Schwenson will also contribute on the defensive line. “We will look to dictate the game and force the offense to execute,” McCaffrey said. “We are excited to watch all of them contribute.”
