Team Preview
Written by: Dallin Fryar The Canyon Ridge Riverhawks are entering its second season under Head Coach Juan Alvarado, who is eager to build on the foundation laid in his first year. Several coaches throughout the GBC stated that Canyon Ridge will be a team to look out for this season, and noted the great job that Coach Alvarado is doing there. Returning to the field are key players like Kade McEntire (S/WR), Adan Lua (OL/DL), and Devan Shinn (DL), bringing experience and leadership to the team. The loss of standout players Conner Willis (QB) and Jasper Robinson (TE) will be felt, but the team is confident in their new impact players, such as Brenner Kunz (DB/WR) and Lorenzo Juarez (RB/LB), who are expected to step up. Offensively, Canyon Ridge's strength lies in their speed and depth in skill positions. However, Coach Alvarado shared that they need to improve on their consistency to maintain possession and sustain drives. Defensively, the team will rely on their depth on the D-Line, with a focus this season on improving tackling. Coach Alvarado is most excited about the team's chemistry in his second year, noting how well the players have bonded and are taking care of each other. The 'X-Factor' this season will be their defense, which features a lot of size and experience. For the first time in several seasons, the Riverhawks had a positive point differential, and that was largely due to the defensive efficiency. In fact, the Riverhawks defense has not allowed less than 30 ppg since the 2017 season until 2023 where they allowed just under 25 ppg. In the conference, Canyon Ridge is anticipated to be a potential contender, with Minico and Twin Falls also expected to perform well. Coach Alvarado notes that Jerome, led by Coach Rich Bishop, could surprise some people this year. As the Riverhawks continue to develop, they are a threat to make a significant impact in the GBC.
