Team Preview
Written by: Dallin Fryar As Cameron Andersen enters his third year as head coach of Burley High School's football team, he is ready to lead a team brimming with returning talent. The Burley Bobcats return nine starters from their last season, including key players such as senior quarterback Mack Jensen, running back Bodee Coombes, and a formidable offensive and defensive line anchored by seniors Michael Martinez, Brock Terry, and Damien Ulloa. Despite losing arguably the best football player to ever walk the hallways of Burley High School in Gatlin Bair, who has taken his talents to the University of Oregon, wide receivers Kendrix Knobbe and Tregan Darrington, along with several other experienced players, will add depth to the roster. The Bobcats also have incoming impact players like junior wide receiver Cove Thompson and senior tight end Tucker Alvey ready to step up. Offensively, Burley plans to stretch the field both horizontally and vertically, using multiple formations and personnel groupings to keep defenses on their toes. The team’s focus this year will be on establishing a physical identity and strengthening their run game, building on the experience gained from last season. Defensively, the Bobcats will base out of an odd front, emphasizing an aggressive, attacking style of play. With adequate team speed, the defense aims to capitalize on its strengths by letting players run and hit. Andersen has highlighted the need for improved tackling consistency, a focus that has driven the team’s offseason preparation. Coach Andersen is most excited to see his players operate with confidence and freedom within the system, particularly on defense, where they have put in significant work during the offseason. The X-factor for Burley's success this season will be their ability to play physically between the tackles, both in running the ball and stopping the run. Burley will begin the season on the road against Century before returning for their home opener against Emmett the following week. The Bobcats will open up conference play September 27th across the river at rival Minico.
