Boise football has turned a corner.
For the first time in years, Boise High is considered a playoff contender entering the season in part because the Brave are coming off one of the best runs in program history and return one of Idaho’s best young quarterbacks.
“We had a tremendous season last year and the team is hungry to build off of it,” head coach Mike Altieri said. “We are a very young team and were excited to see some of the younger guys step up and play a lot of football this season. Most of them were a part of the program last year and had the opportunity to experience one of the best seasons Boise High has had in a long time. We are excited to see what they can do.”
The young squad is led by quarterback Trevor Schoolfield. As a sophomore Schoolfield helped lead the Brave offense to over 30 points per game, the second highest mark in the Southern Idaho Conference (SIC) and the highest average point total in the SIC River pod.
But the Brave quarterback lost his favorite target, Cooper Smith, to graduation. Smith was one of the best receivers in Idaho last year, but the Brave shouldn’t miss a beat as they return senior Jordan McDonald and juniors Eli Rich and Will Gebert to the receiving core.
Last year’s high powered offense helped led Boise to a few appearances in the state’s top five media poll and a 5-0 start, a reality that seemed nearly impossible when Altieri first took over four seasons ago. The run came to an end in the opening round of the state playoffs as the Brave fell to Owyhee in overtime.
At time, the Brave struggled defending the run at times, an area Altieri says he hopes to improve. He hope his athletic linebackers will help him do it.
“We have a very fast linebacking crew,” he said. “They will have to make a lot of big plays for us this year.”
Boise opens the new season Aug. 30 with Capital at Donna Larsen Park.
