Team Preview
Written by: Lucas Gebhart Bishop Kelly has had some great teams over the years, but last year’s championship team may have been one of its best. The Knights went 13-0 and beat their opponents by an average of 30 points per game. They had the 4A Idaho Gatorade Player of the Year at running back (Peter Minnaert) and a Big10 linebacker (Rakeem Johnson) leading the defense and it didn’t surprise many when BK finally lifted the state championship trophy at the end of the year. But despite losing some of its top talent from last year, head coach Chris Culig says BK is ready to re-tool. “We have grown as a team a tremendous amount this off season,” Culig said. The second-year coach says the Knights will be fast and experienced on both sides of the ball and will look to open up the offense more with returning quarterback Ben Avella while opening a new stable of running backs. “Ty Kaschmitter, Parker Allumbaugh, and Ryan Arellano, round out an extremely talented skills group,” Culig said of his running back room. “We will employ a versatile approach and strive for a balanced run and pass game.” Most of the defensive experience is on the Knight’s front seven. Linebackers Will Sachse, Avery Schneck, Jonah Welp and Marcus Powers along with linemen Jaxon Handley, Reed Martin and junior Quentin Powers are all upper classmen that make up the BK front. Senior Cole Traverso leads the back half in the secondary. “We will employ a versatile defense with a strong emphasis on applying pressure,” Culig said. “We want to produce more turnovers and reduce the number of big plays given up.” BK will open the season with Bonneville and Minico before taking on 6A Rigby to open the season.
