Getting things turned in the right direction sometimes takes form in ways other than just simply the win column.
For Cody Howerton, the task is to take a team which has lost 21 games in a row dating back to September 25, 2015 and reverse the fortunes to get back to the level of when Jon Helmandollar took Wendell to the state semifinals in 2013.
It’s no easy task, but slowly but surely the program seems to be making some forward progression.
One of the more noticeable changes for the Trojans comes in the coaching staff, with multiple quality guys added to help improve each side of the ball.
“We got Mike Green from Highland who is one of the great offensive guys in the state, as well as Jerry Diehl and Lonnie Funkhouser, two proven winners with tons of experience coaching the linebackers. We also have two young guys in Mike Konrad out of the Minico program and Zack Clough from Arizona. Great high-energy guys who bring a ton to practice and our program,” said Howerton.
The talent pool on offense starts at the quarterback position.
“Player-wise we have Tristan Wert in his second year and a pretty solid line to give him time,” added Howerton. “Our line is exciting, where last year we really struggled up front.”
Defensively, tackling will be the biggest focus area. Some of the new coaches should be able to help immensely in that regard.
“Jerry Diehl and Lonnnie Funkhouser will be running the defense and they have a great scheme and know how to make it work. Lonnie can coach up some linebackers. Just have a look at his two sons who both played division one football,” said Howerton.
Benjamin Orozco Diaz is a returning linebacker who should help lead the way for the Trojans.
Wendell gets the season started on August 24 at home against Marsing before welcoming in Cole Valley in week two for a Thursday night matchup on August 30. The Cole Valley game can be watched live and free on IdahoSports.com.
