The Malad Dragons see their potential and know that their work will all be worth it.

The team has gone 1-15 over the last two seasons, a record that might not instill confidence in one looking from the outside. However, second year head coach Rick Driessen continues to work to help improve the fortunes of Malad on the football field.

The former assistant defensive coach has a background in weight lifting and conditioning and is helping to get the young men he leads in position to success through increasing their strength. In the tough 2A South East Idaho Conference, every little bit helps.

Driessen said in last year’s football preview that he “expects all of his players to be impact players” because of his team first philosophy.

“If we have All-State players, it’s because of the whole team doing their job, not just one guy,” he said at the time.

That still rings true today for the Dragons, who will look to rise from the ashes and regain their place among the conference elite. They may play in the toughest 2A conference in the state, but they will not allow that to stop them from achieving their goals.

Their offense will have a year of experience under the belts as they hope to improve on last year’s performance. The Dragons averaged only 5.0 points per game in 2016. The defense struggled a year ago, giving up 41.0 points per game.

The 2017 season kicks off for Malad on Aug. 25 when they travel northward on I-15 to take on the Marsh Valley Eagles. They’ll then play three of their next four games at home, including Sept. 1 against Ririe and Sept. 8 versus Firth. The Dragons will then make the long jaunt to Ashton to take on the North Fremont Huskies on Sept. 15, before returning home to open conference play against Aberdeen on Sept. 22.

Malad will play two of their final three games on the road, including Sept. 29 against Soda Springs and Oct. 13 at Bear Lake. They wrap up the regular season at home against rival West Side on Oct. 19.
