Team Preview: Written by: Matt Harris
Early in the 2016 season, news broke out of Fort Hall that Sho-Ban was planning on fielding a football team which would play that season. The Chiefs had not had a football team for four years prior to that announcement. The school quickly organized a schedule and went out and bought all new football gear for the team, which had gone missing at some point over the previous four years.
The Chiefs struggled somewhat (as would be expected with an essentially brand new program), but the team competed night in and night out for head coach Andrew Baldwin. Sho-Ban finished the season with a 1-6 overall record. But the program is on the upswing heading into the 2017 season.
“Last year was year one of the return of Sho-Ban football,” said Baldwin. “I envision this year as being the best year Sho-Ban football has had in a long time. This second year of football is going to be a season for the community to be proud of.”
Almost everyone returns from last season’s squad with an offseason and year of practice under their belts. However, the Chiefs will be without the services of Kiel Sabori due to graduation.
“Kiel was dangerous whenever he had the ball in his hands,” Baldwin said. “He had great speed and most importantly he brought a great attitude with him.”
Back to lead the way on offense is senior quarterback Colton Baldwin. He will be flanked by several senior and sophomore teammates, including senior running back Layne Sequints, senior wide receiver TeeJay Appenay, and sophomore receivers Austin Baldwin and Tuff Medicine Top. The head coach expects the offense to perform well in 2017.
“We should have a balanced attack with Colton having several options to throw to and Layne Sequints seeing a lot of reps at running back,” said Baldwin. “The offense should be able to put some points on the board this year.”
Baldwin added that the biggest improvement he’s seen thus far has been the play of the offensive line.
“Our offensive line play last year was unacceptable,” he said. “That will be improved. There is a lot more power on the offensive line this year and our backfield is a year older and stronger. The offensive line is a key to success this year.”
Returning to the line is senior Koleman Tendoy who will lead the young group of linemen. He will be joined by sophomores Emilio Martinez, Ethan Chacon, and Cole Edmo. These players should also have an impact on the defensive line as well, along with sophomore Antonio Saiz who will see time in the defensive backfield.
The Chiefs open the season at home on Aug. 25 against Pyramid Lake, Nevada, in a game that Baldwin says will ‘really show how much the team has improved’. Conference play in the Sawtooth East Division then begins when Sho-Ban travels to Idaho Falls to take on Watersprings on Sept. 1. The team then returns home for a game on Sept. 8 against Butte County, a team that went to the 1A Division-II state semifinals last year.
Sho-Ban then hits to road on Sept. 15 for a game at Owyhee, Nevada, which was the team they beat for their lone win last season. Following their journey to the Silver State, the Chiefs will head northward to take on the Mackay Miners on Sept. 22.
“The Mackay game is a big rivalry for us,” Baldwin said. “There is no love lost between our two schools.”
The Chiefs then host Clark County on Sept. 28 before completing the regular season on the road on Oct. 6 at Rockland and Oct. 13 at North Gem. The team’s bye week is Oct. 20. Should the Chiefs not qualify for the postseason, they have an arrangement to play against Castleford in Fort Hall on Oct. 27. That game is also dependent on Castleford missing the postseason.
“Graduation took a toll on most of the schools in our conference,” said Baldwin. “Rockland has to be the favorite to win the conference this year. They are well coached.”
Sho-Ban seems to be headed in the right direction under the leadership of Baldwin. They have quite a few young players that could make a big impact as they continue to develop. Could they push for a playoff spot? No one except the team themselves may know, but they will compete week in and week out to improve and progress and show Idaho that they cannot be taken lightly.
